Shireen's Spotlight: Lou's Beer Garden & Gastro Pub

What:

Lou’s Beer Garden, 7337 Harding Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. 33141

Why:

It’s one of the hippest, hottest, well-hidden gems in Miami. Tucked into a canopy of lush, tropical green trees, Lou’s is truly unique: serving great food, unusual craft beers and delicious drinks. Its centerpiece is a pretty pool that sits right in front of the always buzzing open-aired bar.

Although it’s kicked-back and relaxed, don’t mistake this place for some kind of local joint; it’s way more than that. The quality of the food is beyond excellent. I’ve tried almost everything on the menu and I’ve never been disappointed. Matter of fact, this place serves cuisine that I would easily compare to a fancy-schmancy restaurant.

My favorite things on the dinner menu include the Big Angus Burger, Our Carbonara and the Diavola Pizza. Brunch is fabulous, too. The Mary Jane Veggie Frittata, Oppenheimer Death Row Pork Cutlet and Bodacious BLT are crazy good. You’re definitely gonna wanna wash your midday meal down with one of Lou’s famous hot-&-spicy Bloody Mary’s. There’s so much garnish on the drink, it’s like a meal in itself. I hang out at Lou’s when I want to get away from the madness of Miami. The only problem – when I go, I never want to leave.

Where:

Lou’s is right off Harding in North Beach. Parking is tricky because it’s literally right off the side of the road, but there’s a parking lot one block South that’s easily walkable. From my experience, Lou’s is the kind of place where you wanna linger, so it’s always better to cab or uber it.

(The pictures in this blog are from a “Shireen’s Favorite Things” photo shoot I did at Lou’s last year and some personal candids. Trust me, this place is totally worth going out of your way for. Everyone I love, including my Deco Drive/Channel 7 colleagues, always go to Lou’s and that says a lot.)

Shireen’s Spotlight: Morimoto South Beach (inside the Shelborne Wyndham Grand Hotel)

morimoto-2

What: Morimoto, 1801 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach Florida, 33139

Why: Holy orgasmic food goodness! I finally get why people say not all things are created equal; Morimoto’s on South Beach is the perfect example. It has some of the best food I’ve ever tasted in my life. I’m no food critic, but I’ve traveled around the world and dined at my fair share of fancy restaurants. I was absolutely blown away by the food’s excellent quality, aesthetic prowess and detailed decadence.

Morimoto’s famed Tuna Pizza is a must-have. I devoured mine (topped with anchovy aioli, olives and jalapeños,) in about 5 minutes flat. It’s the answer to almost every sushi lovers prayer. The ceviche, which includes a hefty amount of lobster, white fish and conch, was a close second, but it was the Toro Tartar I found most interesting. The chopped tuna belly is served with six different condiments: nori paste, wasabi, sour cream chives, guacamole and rice crackers. It’s amaze-balls.

The absolute highlight of the night, though, was the gi-normous sushi platter (pictured in the blog) that made it’s way to my table mid dinner. It was a feast for the eyes and stomach. Thank goodness, I had a few friends on hand to share the yummy goodness. It was enough to feed a small fashion army and it did. My favorite drink: the Passion Fruit Marguarita (made with tequila, domaine canton and spicy passion fruit.) It has just the right mix of sweet, salty and sour to compliment the freshest of fish.

Although I’m not a big desert person, my dinner easily turned into a prepubescent teen party with major squeal-age once the Fiery Salty Caramel Chocolate Tart arrived. The desert comes with a gigantic chocolate ball that’s lit up and melted into gooey perfection. It’s new on the menu and worth every single, solitary, beyond-sinful calorie.

The open-air, unpretentious hot spot has a warm golden glow to it and an easy atmosphere. What’s more, I found the waitstaff to be very knowledgable and extremely friendly (which is unusual for South Florida; usually, it’s more like the server is doing you a favor and can’t be bothered.) Since expanding my blog and doing Shireen’s Spotlight, this is the place I’m most impressed with. If you haven’t gone yet, you have to ask yourself; WHY?

Where: Morimoto’s is elegantly snuggled into the back of the famed South Beach Shelborne Hotel. When I first moved to Miami, I spent many crazy nights in the basement of that hotel, belting out horribly off-key Karaoke at Club Studio. Man, those were the good old days. As a result, the joint holds a special place in my heart.

Since then, the Shelborne has undergone a major renovation and is now a Wyndham Grand property. It’s biggest “get” as of late, though, is Morimoto’s. The entrance to the restaurant is on the south side of the building, which opens up into the pool area. It still boasts that famous Art Deco spiral staircase that’s been the backdrop for a gazillion famous fashion ads (most notably, old school Versace.)

If you live on the beach, you know how parking is: impossible, but for a pretty penny, Morimoto’s has its own valet. This place is perfect for a romantic date, a special occasion dinner. If you do one thing decadent for yourself this year, dinner at Morimoto’s should be it.

When: Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday 6pm-12pm, Friday & Saturday 6pm-1am.

Essensia Restaurant & Lounge (inside The Palms Hotel & Spa)

Essensia Restaurant & Lounge (inside The Palms Hotel & Spa)

Essensia Restaurant & Lounge (inside The Palms Hotel & Spa)

What: Essensia, 3025 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33140

Why: I love it when I can go out to eat and not be hungover the next day. I’m not talking about liquor, either; I’m talking about food. I don’t do food hangovers and that’s one of the main reasons I love the “Essensia Restaurant & Lounge,” inside the Palms Hotel. The cuisine is “healthy, creative and flavorful”.

Chef Julie Frans not only whips up some of the best “natural gourmet” in the Magic City, she looks pretty good while doing it, too. Julie has a terrific bright, clean energy and it translates into her food. My favorite items on the menu include the Signature Kale Caesar Salad, Grilled Octopus and Thai Lemongrass Soup.

The soup was actually so yummy (made with coconut milk, kaffir lime, tomato, mushroom, bok choy and thai herbs,) it knocked my socks off. That’s not the best kept secret, though: just behind the hotel’s Tiki Bar is Essensia’s Organic Chef’s Garden, maintained by Frans. It’s a green, sprawling delight of herbs and seasonal produce used daily for their delicious recipes. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. The bottom line: they care about what they feed you and how it makes you feel.

Where: The restaurant/bar is tucked away neatly on the first floor of The Palms Hotel & Spa on Miami Beach. I’ve always loved this property because of it’s ridiculously gorgeous grounds. What’s more, it’s a hotel that not only caters to tourists, it celebrates its homegrown crowd, too; with stay-cation and spa specials.

I really like the feel of the hotel, which has this unpretentious regalness to it; reminiscent of an old, well-maintained, tropical Southern mansion, if you will. Parking is a bit tricky, as it’s right on the ever-busy and bustling Collins Avenue. They do have valet, but as usual on the beach, it’s a pretty penny.

When: Essensia is open for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch & Dinner.

Breakfast: Daily 7am-11am
Lunch: Monday-Saturday 11am-3pm
Brunch: Sundays 11am-3pm
Dinner: Sunday-Thursday 6pm-10pm, Friday-Saturday 6pm -11pm

Shireen's Spotlight: Cafe Prima Pasta

Shireen's Spotlight: Cafe Prima Pasta

What: Cafe Prima Pasta, 414 71st Street, Miami Florida 33141

Why: If someone were making a movie about my life, Cafe Prima Pasta would definitely be the backdrop for the opening scene. In the dim, warm amber lighting, the camera would snake its way around the dark wood tables until it found me. I’d be sitting with a lively bunch of people drinking, eating and laughing the night away. It’s just that kind of place.

The Italian restaurant isn’t just one of my favorite places on earth, it’s been a Miami Beach staple for over twenty years. The atmosphere is what I love most. The family-owned eatery makes everyone feel special. When you walk through the door, a good energy immediately engulfs you: they remember your name, quickly serve up your favorite drink and do everything humanly possible to make sure your dining experience is delicious.

Good, heartfelt, unpretentious service is hard to come by these days, but there is no shortage of it at Prima Pasta. I love everything on the menu, but am most partial to their Chicken Parmesan, Bronzino and Lobster Risotto (pictured in the blog.) If I were a dead man walking, though, I would want their Cozze Marinara (sautéed mussels in a light tomato sauce) to be my last meal. If you’re looking for fine dining with a comfortable, elegant feel, this is the place.

Where: It’s right by my house, but more importantly, it’s conveniently located on Miami Beach, just a few short blocks from Collins Avenue on 71st and Harding. They have two parking lots and when those fill up (because they do,) there’s a bank behind the restaurant; they use that lot for parking overflow.

Shireen's Spotlight: Lique Miami, Waterfront Dining & Lounge

Shireen's Spotlight: Lique Miami, Waterfront Dining & Lounge

What: Lique Miami, 3957 NE 163rd Street, North Miami Florida, 33160

Why: Have you ever had one of those amazing nights filled with fantastic food, fabulous friends and great conversation and you don’t want it to end? Unfortunately, the restaurant closes and there’s nothing else open. You’re not about to go clubbing, so you go home without your Friday night grand finale. Well, Lique Miami is the solution. They provide both (friends and lovers not included.)

During the day, the restaurant is a Shabby-Chic-meets-Ralph-Lauren-Home beach house oasis. With pretty faded colors, comfortable chairs and a spectacular view of the Intracoastal. You can dine on the covered patio and enjoy the weather or why not let them arrange a private dining date for you on the water (they’re working with a boating company to give customers this romantic and relaxing experience.) You can arrive by boat, too (with your bad self.)

At night, Lique Miami changes into her sexy evening attire. The lights go dim and its lounge area comes alive. The lounge is part New York City/part London night life, with dark wood, camel-colored leather couches and a cigar/hookah pipe bar. It’s classy and sophisticated and makes me wanna drink some old scotch, wear my beloved Bally riding boots and talk about the stock market.

Lucky for me, I dined at Lique Miami on a press night and got to taste a little bit of everything on the menu, which is a mix of Mediterranean/Sushi along with a raw bar. My favorite was their Hamachi with jalapeño. It was fresh, clean and had a nice zing to it. I definitely think they do fish best, although their homemade gnocchi was pretty kick-ass, too. I washed everything down with a beautiful speciality cocktail called “Love.” Hmmm…it was filled with fruity goodness and a dab of tequila, leaving me to write the obvious: what’s not to Love-about-Lique?

Where: The restaurant is on 163rd street in Sunny Isles. It’s the long street/causeway connecting Collins Avenue to Biscayne Boulevard. It’s beside a strip mall hidden in a corner by the water. Don’t let the area fool you; once you’ve parked (they have valet) and walk inside, you’re transported into upscale charm.

When:
Monday-Thursday 6-12pm, Friday 6pm-1am (Closed Tuesday)
Saturday Brunch 11am-4pm/Saturday Dinner 6pm-1am
Sunday Brunch 11am-4pm/Dinner 6pm to Midnight
The lounge is open Monday-Sunday 11pm-4am (Closed Tuesday)
