What:

Drinks & Dinner at a new family-owned gem called “Biella Ristorante” — named after a picturesque town in Northern Italy known for its culinary traditions and delicious wines.

Why:

Chic, glamorous and interesting, “Biella Ristorante” is quickly making a name for itself on the South Florida food scene. The Italian eatery, which has only been open a few short months, proves you don’t have to travel to Italy to taste REAL Italian food.

Snuggled inside a busy strip mall on Sunny Isles Beach, the inside of the restaurant is completely different than the outside. With European wall paper, Italian leather furniture and sophisticated decor, you’re transported into modern luxury. The atmosphere is warm & welcoming and the staff (special shout-out to Hector) is totally on it. They definitely know their stuff.

With an extensive cocktail list, I started my #Spotlight experience at Biella’s Bar, which is decorated in glamorous black & white photos and accented with a plush purple couch. It’s a #SocialMediaPic waiting to happen. Plus, who doesn’t wanna sink into a #PlushPurpleCouch?

If you like Cosmos (think Sex and the City) and Apple-tinis (think tart green apple) you’ll wanna try the “Cosmo Tiny” — a perfect blend of both drinks. It’s topped with apple foam and garnished with a maraschino cherry. I love how the drink is layered with flavors; to get the full effect, you have to take more of a swig than a sip. #BottomsUp

The bite-sized “Crispy Pork Belly” appetizer (which is on the bar menu,) is a must-try, marinated in Italian sweet sauce. If you’re more of a carb lover, “Avocado Crostini” is yummy with charred corn, goat cheese and rainbow trout caviar. Both are pretty healthy, which is always a good thing when you’re saving calories for pizza and pasta. Speaking of…

When it comes to amazing pies, they have great options: Margherita, Prosciutto, Pancetta etc. I went with “Salmone” with homemade Squid Ink Pizza Dough. Don’t let its dark appearance dissuade you, it’s incredibly delicious. Smothered in cream cheese and topped with smoked salmon, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to pizza heaven. (If you’ve never tasted squid ink, it’s rich and briny.)

“Ooh Child,” if you like pasta, you’ve hit the homemade noodle jackpot at Biella. I tried the mushroom ravioli drenched in decadent creamy mushroom sauce topped with fresh Parmigiano-Reggiano. If you need more sustenance, they have steak, lamb chops, chicken and fish on the menu, too. After dinner…

I had three desserts, two creative cocktails (for the girl who likes to drink her calories #me) and one mind-blowing dish called “Apple Torrejas” served with cinnamon ice cream & caramelized apples. It was a pile of ooey-gooey love in my mouth. I’m still daydreaming about the maple butter sauce and fluffy brioche. I slid into #Spotlight home base with the “Almond Joy Martini” topped with coconut foam and YES, it tastes like the candy bar it’s named after. I finished with a palate cleansing “Kiwi Tiny” — made with muddled cucumber and mint kiwi cucumber foam.

I love that Biella Ristorante has spiced-up the food scene on Sunny Isles Beach and best of all, you don’t have to trudge through some gi-normous condo building to find it. Instead, walk right up and enjoy an intimate night of classy cocktails & scrumptious Italian cuisine — that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things. Cheers!

The truth about entertainment news

When Dr. Scanlon asked me to stand up in front of my entire college broadcast journalism class and deliver a story on the political unrest in the Republic of Azerbaijan — I was horrified.

My stomach flipped, my hands grew sweaty and my mouth dried up like the Mojave Desert. Telling a story in front of hundreds of my peers was one thing, but wrapping my mind and words around something happening a world away freaked me out and it wouldn’t be the first time.

In fact, freaking out seemed to be woven into the very texture of becoming a budding journalist. My first TV job uprooted me to a strange city where I worked relentless hours for shit money, but that’s not what freaked me out.

It was chasing my first tornado, watching a raging brush fire burn down someone’s beloved home and seeing a dead baby at the scene of a tragic car accident that gutted me. I cried a lot at the beginning of my career and wondered, albeit silently, if I really had the chops to make it as a journalist.

After a few years of hard news, I found respite in a weekly features segment my news director stoically assigned me. At first, I hated it and he knew it. “Happy News?” Who has time for that? I was busy laying the ground work for something special: War Reporter, White House Correspondent, International On-Air Specialist (think Christiane Amanpour.) Entertainment was NOT my cup of tea, but apparently, my bosses thought otherwise.

Eventually, my segment about interesting people, intriguing places and fun parties became so popular locally, the powers-that-be asked me to name it. I agreed on one condition – they never take hard news away from me and that’s how “Shireen On The Scene” came to be.

Over the years, my serious stories gave way to anchor promotions, but my weekly features remained intact — until a bigger city came calling. My next job, as a full-fledged entertainment journalist, would change the trajectory of my career forever and before I knew it, I had a whole other level of freak-outs: aggressive travel, finding my way around Hollywood, New York City, interviewing television actors and the occasional movie star.

David Duchovny (from The X-Files) was my first celebrity one-on-one and he was beyond gracious, but finding my footing amongst Hollywood’s elite wasn’t something I was born with; I had to learn and cultivate it while maintaining my journalistic integrity.

Along the way, I had moments of hyper-insecurity and feelings of not being good enough. Making matters worse — the deep cliques inside the entertainment reporting world. I was shunned by certain colleagues and spoken ill of (not even behind my back) and excluded from group activities and after work get-togethers. Despite, the anguish it caused me…

I remember this part of my career fondly and not because of the rich and famous or the eccentric reporters, but because I worked at a television station in the Midwest where the people were kind and the show I worked on was a close-knit family. My “On The Scene” segments weren’t just about celebrities, they had morphed into live features reporting, too.

I spent years doing live-shot after live-shot showcasing museums, musicals, restaurants, vintage stores, bands, parades, sporting events; the list goes on. One of my favorite assignments was going live from Las Vegas as my best friend got hitched by an Elvis impersonator (I was his best “wo-MAN.”) There was so much joy in all of it.

The smiling, laughing and feel-good moments were incredibly rewarding. It was then that I realized “Happy News” was a gift I had been afforded the extraordinary privilege of giving. And as fate would have it, when I finally relinquished my Christiane Amanpour reporting dreams – the universe opened up and showered me with gifts.

One of them was South Florida and Deco Drive. By then, I knew my way around Hollywood and NYC and solidified a few strong friendships on the celebrity junket circuit, but the freak-outs still came. Miami was a beast in itself: large and in charge, but it was nothing compared to what happened inside the walls of WSVN (one of the best television stations in the country.)

It was fast, demanding and extremely competitive. Everything was expected and nothing was given, especially respect. THAT you earned. American Idol, award shows, movie and television stars, singers (rock, pop, opera). It was entertainment on crack. I traveled the world doing mind-blowing assignments and watched as the news business turned its sights on celebrities, dubbing it “info-tainment.”

Before I knew it (on any given day,) I could be the lead on the 6 o’clock news. #HowDidThatHappen? I was officially a new kind of Christiane Amanpour and even though it wasn’t war, sometimes it felt like it. I dealt with shitty celebrities, mean publicists and psychotic entertainment reporters. One time on a television junket, I was pushed against a wall and choked by an actor’s manager for asking “the wrong question”. It took five reporters to get the woman off me. I didn’t press charges because she was fired.

I’ll never forgive John Travolta’s cranky publicist for aggressively demeaning me after giving John a cheeky award from Deco Drive. It was around Oscar time and we bequeathed him the title: “Best Celebrity Cockpit.” He was a pilot (for the love of God) and everyone at Deco loved him. John couldn’t have been more delightful during our interview, but afterward his publicist yelled in my face (stinky spit and all); threatening to have me fired because he felt Deco was insinuating something else. Oh, the stories I have.

It wasn’t all a battle — for every batshit-crazy actor, publicist and manager, there were dozens of amazing ones, too. And I do mean amazing. Talented. Gracious and good. It was the same for reporters: while some were mean-spirited opportunists looking to unseat you from your job, others were smart, funny and insanely good at what they did. And giving of their knowledge, time and expertise.

So, here we are. At the end of this blog. Yes, there have been other stops in my career, but being promoted to co-host of Deco Drive was one of the proudest moments of my life. All of the hard work, moxie, sacrifice and skill, paid off.

On a nondescript news day in the Deco Plex, my bosses gave me a cake with pink flowers that read: “Congratulations, Shireen.” I cried. Just like I did at the beginning of my career, but this time, I knew I had the chops to make it as a journalist. 😊

Since then, entertainment news and all of its trappings have become ~TRANSPARENT~ at least to me. As a graduated Entertainment Host/Reporter, I know this for sure…

Celebrities lose their jobs, struggle financially, suffer mental illness, get addicted to drugs, their babies die, their houses burn down and while some of them have extraordinary gifts (Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, Whitney, Prince, Michael,) they’re just like the rest of us. Trying to find happiness, fulfillment and meaning. It’s just how we’re built and tragedy befalls all of us, even the greatest and most gifted. With that being said…

My college professor, Dr. Scanlon, died a long time ago, but his lessons live on — in me. And while The Republic of Azerbaijan eventually won its own democracy (freeing itself from communism,) in a way, I did, too.

I’m definitely not the hard news journalist I thought I’d be; in fact, I’m worlds away from it and I’m pretty sure being ~TRANSPARENT~ about it is what Dr. Scanlon would have wanted — and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things.

What:

Pizza & drinks at “Call Me Gaby” — a romantic garden oasis South Of Fifth.

Why:

Charming & rustic: “Call Me Gaby” reminds me of something you’d find deep in the countryside of Tuscany but lucky for us, it’s conveniently located on South Beach. The cottage-style Italian restaurant is decorated with white-washed furniture, overstuffed throw pillows, pink roses and shabby/chic ornaments.

Its fabulous outdoor patio is lush with greenery & easily uses Miami’s tropical personality as its backdrop. I started my Spotlight experience there smothered in comfy cushions on a sprawling couch while sipping a decadent & delicious “Panna Cotta Martini” (made with vanilla vodka, coconut cream, mixed berries and ricotta cheese.) #SweetAndStylish

After enjoying the beautiful weather, I moved inside to admire the delightful decor & of course, taste the food. One side of the restaurant has a long, working pizza bar with a brick oven, the other a cocktail bar, where they whipped me up a “Gigalo” (made with Frangelico, Chambord, muddled lime & fresh berry juice.) Hmmm…this one is for the record books. It’s gorgeous to look at and even tastier to drink. 🍹

My three appetizers, which arrived at the same time, were chosen to complement one another. “Tomato In Jar” (which is under “salad” on the menu) was fresh and healthy with heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onions & black olives. I fell madly in love with the lamb and beef meatballs — called “Pot of Meatballs” — served with whipped fresh ricotta, chives & olive oil. I devoured both alongside the “Focaccia” (made with pizza dough, rosemary, coarse salt and extra virgin olive oil.)

All of “Call Me Gaby’s” dough is to-die-for and made Pinsa Romana Style. Meaning, it’s extra hydrated, light and airy. So you can leave the bloat at home because you won’t be getting it from the food off this menu. When they filled me in on this fun little fact, I imagined myself driving straight home, lighting all my Spanx on fire while eating an entire “Call Me Gaby” pizza straight outta the box. #BringItOn #YesTheyDeliver 🍕

All that pizza-eating empowerment got me to thinking: who’s Gaby, anyway? And should I thank her in person? I came to find out “Gaby” isn’t just ONE woman, she’s ALL women (beautiful, strong, stylish, talented, NOT bloated and can make a great pizza pie.) The concept was created by the restaurant’s owner, Cathy.

Food with a healthy dose of #GirlPower? *MAN, don’t mind if I do. Speaking of, there also happens to be a team of masculine Italian chefs handcrafting pizzas and I tried two of them — by the way, “Call Me Gaby’s” gourmet pies are named after women — “Angela” is made with smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, lemon zest and dill. It had incredible taste, texture and high quality ingredients. Not to be out done, the wonderfully unique “Pizzaladiere” with caramelized onions, anchovies and black olives. It was sweet and savory. I’ve never tasted anything like it and that’s saying something with all the food I’ve tried over the last four years. #MyMuffinTopIsTheRealDeal 🙀

Before dessert, I wet my whistle one last time with the strong & tasty “Gaby Margarita” … made with tequila, mezcal, jalapeño-infused Green Chartreuse, cucumber and lime juice, this is NOT your ordinary margarita. It’s #SouthOfTheBorderItalianStyle 💃🏻

For dessert, with a Limoncello in hand, I tried the lovely “Catalina Pizzetta” topped with cream cheese, mixed berries, honey and almonds. If you’re more of a doughnut lover, “Antonella” will take you prisoner and never grant you parole with finger dough, Nutella, powdered sugar and pistachio crumble. 😊

“Call Me Gaby” isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience with GREAT food and AMAZING atmosphere, the patio is especially picture perfect and best of all, it’s a place that celebrates women and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things. Now, pass the pizza pie!

What:

Getting to wear a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted couture gown in a setting that would make even James Bond jealous. The name is Sandoval, Shireen Sandoval.

Why:

A few months ago, I got an email that rocked my fashion world. Mind you, with the hundreds I get on a daily basis it takes me days, sometimes weeks, to open them and even longer to respond. For whatever reason, this one was different. I clicked on it right away, scrolled down to the pictures and there it was — THE DRESS.

In a stroke of genius, TA Couture & Aston Martin Residences downtown Miami decided to join forces for a night of art & fashion and one of the impressive results? The gorgeous gown featured in “License to Frill” — which is by far one of the most awe-inspiring things I’ve ever put on my body. Now I fully get the “fairy tale princess” thing. #Swoon

The one-of-a-kind, eye-popping masterpiece was created by Fashion Designer Tammy Apostol (TA Couture) and hand-painted by artist Griselda Lechini. The princess-cut strapless gown features a full skirt with 60 yards of fabric & is embellished with crystals and silk flowers. The combination of impressionism artwork and ornate trimmings allows for a three-dimensional fashion experience. Adding an extra touch of elegance, fascinators from TA Couture’s millinery atelier.

So, where does Aston Martin Residences come into all this? Besides being a beautiful backdrop for the TA Couture event and “License to Frill” — it’s also awe-inspiring in its own way. Soon to be the tallest luxury condominium building in Miami-Dade, its extreme quality is married to its exceptional design and when you think about it, that’s exactly what couture embodies, too.

And, it’s what Aston Martin prides itself on when designing cars like the Vulcan, which shares the spotlight in “License to Frill” (shot inside the showroom at the Aston Martin residences.) With 820 horsepower and curves to make any man drool, the 2.3 million dollar hyper car isn’t just engineering, it’s art. There are only 24 in the entire world. It’s simply spectacular, but then again, what element of this blog isn’t? #JackpotBlog

If you’re not ready to jump into a ball gown, TA Couture also released a line of limited edition art tunics that incorporate Griselda’s paintings. They’re perfect for a cocktail party, romantic dinner or just to add a burst of summer color to your wardrobe. By the way, if you’re not familiar with TA Couture, you need to be. Especially if you’re a glamour puss like myself. Tammy is an infectious and experienced designer who’s creations are expressive, chic and feminine.

It’s not everyday a girl gets a “License to Frill” — but with the perfect combination of fashion, art, architecture and engineering, one can’t help but get special permission to show it all off and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things.

What:

A delicious brunch at Stiltsville Fish Bar in Sunset Harbour, where the ease of beach living is complemented by great seafood and killer cocktails.

Why:

One of my favorite places on planet earth is “The Florida Keys” and a lot of it has to do with the amazing food and incredible laid-back, beachy atmosphere, but why drive hours South when all you have to do is head to Sunset Harbour and dine at Stiltsville Fish Bar?

The restaurant is incredibly charming and drenched in its own seaside personality, with weathered “shabby chic” wooden walls and gorgeous seashell chandeliers. I especially love the huge windows/doors that open up an entire wall of the restaurant; allowing diners to see what life is really like on Miami Beach.

When I went for brunch a few weeks ago, I watched paddle boarders, kayakers and park-goers bask in the beautiful weekend weather. My Spotlight experience wasn’t just about a great view, though; the true stand-out at Stiltsville is the innovative food and drink. Speaking of…

“Mary The Green Garden Gnome” — Stiltsville’s take on the Bloody Mary — was the perfect way to start my day. The yummy tequila-based drink is a spicy concoction of green tomato juice, Tabasco, jalapeño and comes topped with a heaping helping of pickled veggies. Because it’s so popular, I tried “Cobia Tiradito” (made with avocado, crispy hominy & popped corn) from the dinner menu. I hate being dramatic, but this is #FoodPorn at its finest. It was incredible. A must-try.

“The Smoked Fish Dip” (made with cherry wood smoked local catch,) reminded me of something you’d enjoy on a hot summer day in New England. It’s served with tasty homemade toasted saltines. If you’re more of a sweet tooth kind of bruncher, the “Hummingbird Waffle” has your name written all over it (made with rum caramel, charred pineapple, pecans & mascarpone whip.) #CarbLoversRejoice

One of the most impressive things I’ve seen since I started the food blog is “The Big Kahunalada” for two — a drink & appetizer combined. The awe-inspiring treat is served in a ginormous copper pineapple: one half is filled to the brim with vodka, rum, lemongrass, coconut milk and pineapple, the other half comes with two extra large crispy coconut shrimp which have great texture – think Nabisco’s Shredded Wheat.

As if I wasn’t impressed enough, the “Sweet Corn Spoon Bread” (which is on the dinner menu,) made its way to the table. If you like decadence, you’ll wanna wrap your mouth around this dish. It’s made with buttermilk cream and scallions. Take it to the next level by adding buttery poached lobster. Sticking with a savory theme, I tried “Pork Belly Bacon & Sweet Corn Pancakes” with poached eggs & “Stiltsville Egg Benedict” with Blue Crab Cake (they have Lobster and house-made Pork Belly Bacon choices, too.) If I were a dead woman walking, both would be included in my final meal. Lol. I mean, do I actually have to choose?

I’ve been dying to take a swig of “The Mermaid Formerly Known As Janine” ever since I spotted her on Stiltsville’s Instagram. The drink, named after Executive Chef Janine Booth, is a mix of vodka, bubbles, passion fruit pearls and vanilla bean. The sassy copper sea creature was made especially for Stiltsville (by Absolut Elyx) and is definitely a social media picture waiting to happen. #Cheese

Impressive in a different deep sea kind of way: “Big Fish For 2” which is a Crispy Whole Snapper seasoned with lemon basil salsa verde & dusted in key lime. Not only does it look spectacular, it’s cooked to perfection: delicate, moist and incredibly fresh. And don’t worry, they do the work for you, deboning and serving.

What’s brunch without a little baked dessert? I’m a sucker for a good Beignet (think Cafe Du Monde quality) and Stiltsville’s are perfectly powered and served with chicory coffee pudding. I also tried the single-serving “Strawberry Rhubarb Pie” with Rhubarb ice cream. Hello, #HeavenOnEarth — don’t judge our upside down ice-cream picture. James (my photographer) and I were so excited to taste it, I’m not sure HOW it ended up that way.

While Stiltsville is gorgeous and the food is to-die-for (the pictures don’t even do it justice,) the attention to detail, incredible customer service and kindness is what puts it in a league of its own.

Executive Chefs Jeff McGinnis & Janine (the aforementioned mermaid mug inspo,) who happen to be engaged, have taken their combined knowledge of food and hospitality and built something pretty special. If you love the beach, fresh seafood and long for a one-of-a kind dining experience, Stiltsville is not to be missed and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things. Cheers!
