What:

Brunching at Mason Eatery, where dishes like Goopy Egg & Creamed Corn have shooketh my foodie world.

Why:

Tucked into the heart of Midtown Miami, Mason Eatery is light, airy and the perfect place to grab a quick, quality bite or enjoy a long leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner. Its laid-back sophistication is a breath of fresh air in a city where “more is more” seems to be an exhaustive restaurant theme.

The family-owned, Art Deco-inspired eatery prides itself on unique culinary cuisine, serving up dishes like Creamed Corn made with red shrimp & cornbread crumble. 😋 Mason also makes everything from scratch and I do mean everything. The salmon is killer: cured with salt and dill for three days, rinsed and smoked for six hours.

It’s nothing short of mind-blowing and beautifully presented in their Bagel & Lox with garlic cream cheese and capers. You can get it on their Mason Board, too, which also comes with 12-day, house marinated pastrami and ham. Mmmm… the homemade mustard is definitely something to write home about and I don’t even like mustard. I guess I’ve just never tasted the real thing. #BottleAndSell

If you’re a cocktail lover, you’ll appreciate their fresh take on drinks like the Mule with ginger beer & Cardamaro or go for the unusual with A Mason Grace with Rose’, elderflower and ale. If you’re more of a mimosa fan, try the watermelon; it was my favorite. If you like fresh juices, the pineapple is life-changing. 🥂🍉🍍

The mouthwatering ham n’ cheese omelette is served with a yummy latke and the Mason Salad (with a chicken add on) makes watching your waistline all the more enjoyable. As if all of that wasn’t enough…

My true love affair was with the Goopy Egg — Muenster cheese mixed with sour cream and bagel chips to dip with #ComeToMama. The chips are homemade, just like all of their bread. Speaking of… so was my dessert: two melt-in-your-mouth cookies (chocolate chip and double chocolate) and a delicious key lime bar. 🍪🍰

While Mason is perfect the way it is (especially their late night hours,) I hear provocative changes are in store. Until then, I’ll enjoy the inspiring food and the feel good atmosphere – it’s one of my Favorite Things. Cheers!

What:

A delicious brunch at Stiltsville Fish Bar in Sunset Harbour, where the ease of beach living is complemented by great seafood and killer cocktails.

Why:

One of my favorite places on planet earth is “The Florida Keys” and a lot of it has to do with the amazing food and incredible laid-back, beachy atmosphere, but why drive hours South when all you have to do is head to Sunset Harbour and dine at Stiltsville Fish Bar?

The restaurant is incredibly charming and drenched in its own seaside personality, with weathered “shabby chic” wooden walls and gorgeous seashell chandeliers. I especially love the huge windows/doors that open up an entire wall of the restaurant; allowing diners to see what life is really like on Miami Beach.

When I went for brunch a few weeks ago, I watched paddle boarders, kayakers and park-goers bask in the beautiful weekend weather. My Spotlight experience wasn’t just about a great view, though; the true stand-out at Stiltsville is the innovative food and drink. Speaking of…

“Mary The Green Garden Gnome” — Stiltsville’s take on the Bloody Mary — was the perfect way to start my day. The yummy tequila-based drink is a spicy concoction of green tomato juice, Tabasco, jalapeño and comes topped with a heaping helping of pickled veggies. Because it’s so popular, I tried “Cobia Tiradito” (made with avocado, crispy hominy & popped corn) from the dinner menu. I hate being dramatic, but this is #FoodPorn at its finest. It was incredible. A must-try.

“The Smoked Fish Dip” (made with cherry wood smoked local catch,) reminded me of something you’d enjoy on a hot summer day in New England. It’s served with tasty homemade toasted saltines. If you’re more of a sweet tooth kind of bruncher, the “Hummingbird Waffle” has your name written all over it (made with rum caramel, charred pineapple, pecans & mascarpone whip.) #CarbLoversRejoice

One of the most impressive things I’ve seen since I started the food blog is “The Big Kahunalada” for two — a drink & appetizer combined. The awe-inspiring treat is served in a ginormous copper pineapple: one half is filled to the brim with vodka, rum, lemongrass, coconut milk and pineapple, the other half comes with two extra large crispy coconut shrimp which have great texture – think Nabisco’s Shredded Wheat.

As if I wasn’t impressed enough, the “Sweet Corn Spoon Bread” (which is on the dinner menu,) made its way to the table. If you like decadence, you’ll wanna wrap your mouth around this dish. It’s made with buttermilk cream and scallions. Take it to the next level by adding buttery poached lobster. Sticking with a savory theme, I tried “Pork Belly Bacon & Sweet Corn Pancakes” with poached eggs & “Stiltsville Egg Benedict” with Blue Crab Cake (they have Lobster and house-made Pork Belly Bacon choices, too.) If I were a dead woman walking, both would be included in my final meal. Lol. I mean, do I actually have to choose?

I’ve been dying to take a swig of “The Mermaid Formerly Known As Janine” ever since I spotted her on Stiltsville’s Instagram. The drink, named after Executive Chef Janine Booth, is a mix of vodka, bubbles, passion fruit pearls and vanilla bean. The sassy copper sea creature was made especially for Stiltsville (by Absolut Elyx) and is definitely a social media picture waiting to happen. #Cheese

Impressive in a different deep sea kind of way: “Big Fish For 2” which is a Crispy Whole Snapper seasoned with lemon basil salsa verde & dusted in key lime. Not only does it look spectacular, it’s cooked to perfection: delicate, moist and incredibly fresh. And don’t worry, they do the work for you, deboning and serving.

What’s brunch without a little baked dessert? I’m a sucker for a good Beignet (think Cafe Du Monde quality) and Stiltsville’s are perfectly powered and served with chicory coffee pudding. I also tried the single-serving “Strawberry Rhubarb Pie” with Rhubarb ice cream. Hello, #HeavenOnEarth — don’t judge our upside down ice-cream picture. James (my photographer) and I were so excited to taste it, I’m not sure HOW it ended up that way.

While Stiltsville is gorgeous and the food is to-die-for (the pictures don’t even do it justice,) the attention to detail, incredible customer service and kindness is what puts it in a league of its own.

Executive Chefs Jeff McGinnis & Janine (the aforementioned mermaid mug inspo,) who happen to be engaged, have taken their combined knowledge of food and hospitality and built something pretty special. If you love the beach, fresh seafood and long for a one-of-a kind dining experience, Stiltsville is not to be missed and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things. Cheers!

What:

A glamorous Friday night dinner at HABITAT — where sophisticated food is served in a chic, unpretenious atmosphere.

Why:

Warm, inviting and exceptionally creative; HABITAT (inside 1 Hotel, South Beach) is exactly what you’d expect from Chef extraordinaire, Jose Mendin. When I went last Friday night, I fell madly in love with the place. From the beautiful plant-enhanced bar to the adorable Parisian-inspired dessert cart, the restaurant is a breath of fresh air for the Magic City. The menu, a fusion of Spanish, Latin & Asian cuisines, isn’t just inspiring, it’s nourishing, too.

The “Heirloom Beet Tartare” is the perfect example. While yummy, it’s something you can feel good about putting in your body (made with raspberries, pistachios and creme fraiche.) Just as good is the “Habitat Caprese,” with local baby tomatoes, melon, basil and mozzarella spheres that pop in your mouth. If you’re more of a sashimi lover, you’ll go crazy over “Hamachi Augachiles” (which is Japanese yellowtail in chili-spiked ceviche juice with watermelon, radishes and cilantro.)

I washed it all down with a “Fifth Element” (yes, like the movie.) I’ve never tasted anything like it! Combining tequila, pineapple, cilantro, avocado, agave, lime, egg whites and citrus salt, it definitely gets my boozy seal of approval. “That 1 Cocktail” is a pretty close second with vodka, ginger liquor, Prosecco and lemon zest. If you like berries with an elder flower twist, the “Blue View” is just for you (made with vodka, elderflower liquor, lemon and blueberries. ) The cocktails at Habitat are #refreshing #creative & #unique. 👌🏼🍸

I couldn’t wait to try the “Salt Cured Foie Gras” and it didn’t disappoint. Not only was it soft and buttery, its side of tomato chutney made it: “Hello, lovah” worthy. #NomNomNom. The Kimchee Mayo & Garlic Ponzu added an exciting twist to the “Octopus a la Planxa” and the “Clams Carbonara” is definitely something to write home about…

Four petite piles of linguine are placed on clam shells and served up as pretty as a picture. The dish is delicious and beyond decadent; don’t take it from me, take it from the woman sitting at the table next to me who said: “It’s the best thing I’ver ever tasted in my LIFE.” If that’s not a glowing recommendation, I don’t know what is. 🙌

From the Wood Fire Grill, the “Monk Fish,” which reminds me a lot of lobster (texture and taste-wise) has incredible seasoning and the tangy side of pickled fennel & radish really accented the flavor.

After a visit from the stylish dessert cart, I munched on a few Macaroons and Petite Fours —move over Laduree’ because these babies will give you a run for your Euro. #ComeToMama Ending my glamorous Friday night experience was the “Habitat” dessert with mint basil almond cake, chocolate mousse and mango, topped with coconut shavings. 😊

Whether you’re grabbing a few drinks (there’s an upstairs bar & a cute camper that serves cocktails, too) or a quick nosh, maybe even a leisurely dinner, HABITAT has the kind of panache our beautiful city is known for and its provocative food does more than just look good, it tastes GREAT and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things.

Summer Chic

What:

Looking chic in the South Florida summer heat with Scarves & Swimsuit Covers by designer Carlos Marrero.

Why:

Have you ever seen that “Sex and the City” episode where Carrie Bradshaw makes fun of women who wear hair scrunchies?

She basically tells her boyfriend that women in Manhattan don’t wear scrunchies because they’re too sophisticated. They get in a fight over it — even break up.

Her boyfriend thinks it’s nonsense, mainly because he’s just written a book featuring a female protagonist who, yes, wears a scrunchy. Carrie ribs him for it. He obviously can’t take the criticism.

At the end of the episode, they agree to meet at a bar to work things out. As they stand there waiting for their drinks, a beautiful woman walks by and sure enough, her hair is tied back with a scrunchy.

They glare at one another as they overhear the woman explain she’s from Georgia and is only in NYC for a couple of days to go sight-seeing. There’s more to it than that, but you get the gist.

After that particular episode, I rummaged through my accessory drawer and trashed all of my cloth hair ties. Then, in dramatic fashion, I looked myself in the mirror and vowed to NEVER EVER wear a scrunchy again. After all, I was grooming myself to be one of those chic city women, who would leave their mark on Manhattan (scrunchy-less).

And, I did.

I got married, moved to the city, dabbled in television, shopped, ate and socialized my way through the five boroughs without ever once wearing a scrunchy. I was so proud of myself — until my life started to unravel (pun intended.)

My marriage fell apart, I got incredibly depressed and on a whim, decided to leave New York. In hindsight, it probably wasn’t the best decision, but I was good at running away; I inherited that trait from my mother.

After moving back to South Florida, I did what most normal people do: clean, organize, grocery shop and go to the drugstore. That’s when I saw it, squished between the shower caps and fake eyelashes in Aisle 1: a large pack of multi-colored scrunchies.

They seemed to be illuminated by a higher power, but I knew it was just the cheap overhead lighting playing tricks on me. I stood there, just staring at them, powerless. Who was I? And why in God’s name would I judge myself or anyone else for that matter for wearing a scrunchy? I felt ridiculous.

I threw the pack in my basket, paid and went home. The next day, the ever-so reliable scrunchy, once again, became part of my life and not only was I proud of it, I knew…

I was a changed woman.

The same thing happened to me a few years later, when I met designer Carlos Marrero, who doesn’t like it when you call him a designer. He prefers: “Renaissance Man.”

In 2015, the Renaissance Man and I worked on “Wrapped & Bagged,” a blog featuring his new scarf and purse collection.

Although I had always loved a good scarf, I shied away from them because I thought they made me look old, outdated and, even worse, like a washed-up news reporter or old-time anchor. Think Connie Chung in the mid 90’s.

I’m not gonna lie, I judged people who wore them, too. Yes, like that snotty Carrie Bradshaw character who, despite being an IT girl, didn’t understand the true meaning of fashion: unadulterated self expression. Even if that meant wearing a scrunchy or a scarf.

Then, like a cool summer breeze, Carlos blew into my life.

The one-time fashion illustrator, who used to sketch images for magazines like Glamour, Cosmo and Vogue, showed me what real scarf fashion was all about.

His brilliant idea of taking his fabulous fashion sketches and transferring them onto quality scarves breathed new life into my accessory game. Move over, Hermes! The best part — I didn’t have to sell a kidney to buy one.

Everything he makes I adore: the minimal, colorful and outrageous. He’s all about energy, vibe and glamour. I have a drawer full of his creations (a happy Buddha, beautiful boho flowers, a detailed Hamsa, intricate mosaics and more.) I wear them everywhere and with just about anything.

Now, Carlos is expanding his line; introducing a capsule collection of bathing suit cover-ups. He’s always had a penchant for sophisticated beauty and it’s easily conveyed in his new pieces.

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight at 7:30 & 11:30pm, as we get the FIRST LOOK at Carlos’ new beach-to- cocktail clothing. Being “Summer Chic” has never been so easy and stylish thanks to the Marrero Collection and that’s why scarves, scrunchies and pool cover-up’s are one of my Favorite Things.

What:

Kaori by WM 1250 South Miami Avenue, Miami, Florida 33130

Why:

Kaori isn’t just a restaurant, it’s this incredible kaleidoscope of food, art and technology fused into a beyond-surreal dining experience. It’s so amazing and unusual — it’s like nothing I’ve ever encountered before.

Before Spotlight, I had heard A LOT about Kaori, but I couldn’t really wrap my mind around what some food critics were calling “a culinary theatre.” Deco Drive even did a whimsical feature on it, but the television camera only captured a fraction of its magic, which I wouldn’t fully understand until I dined there myself.

I arrived (with my crew) around 9pm on a Friday evening. I was tired from a busy week at work, but when I walked through the door, I felt strangely energized and incredibly interested in what was going on around me.

At first, Kaori comes across as pristine and intimate with colorful chairs, sleek glossy tables and white walls; but as you begin your dining experience, it transforms into something much, much bigger…

It’s a full journey of the five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and most importantly, taste. Kaori is the brainchild of Executive Chef Walter Martino A.K.A the “Million Dollar Chef” (he’s called that because he created the most expensive plate in the world). Chef Martino uses “alchemy, beauty and 360-degree cinematography” to serve-up one helluva luxurious food adventure.

Usually, I start Spotlight with a few different drinks, but at Kaori my “rules” were quickly thrown out the proverbial food blog window and Chef Martino who, by the way, has the coolest laid-back personality, took complete charge. No doubt about it, he’s the ONLY chef in the kitchen.

I was told to sit back, relax and handed a (non-nicotine) vapor stick filled with a smooth lemon flavor to cleanse my palette. I puffed away, doing my best old movie star imitation.

The first thing to arrive at the table was a jaw-dropping presentation of White Tuna Ceviche and Stracciatella topped with Caviar and edible gold and silver flakes. Along with it, our first cocktail arrived, too, called the Celery Pepper (made by master mixologist Nick Nistico) with gin, celery, lime juice, simple syrup and peppercorn. It was tart and sophisticated.

Our next appetizer was a smashing presentation of two sushi rolls. The platter itself reminded me of a giving tree, with branches serving up a Tuna Tartar Roll (yellow fin, mango, iceberg, Kaori sauce and cilantro) and the Bresaola/Jamon Ibierico Roll (basically salted beef and cured ham).

The next dish was by far my favorite — I mean, what fashionista doesn’t love Veggie Tempura served-up inside a sassy shoe & matching purse!? The tempura was so succulent it practically melted in my mouth (it was a mix of green and white asparagus, scallions, baby beets, zucchini and carrots).

While devouring the fashionable veggies, the Spicy Pepper Caraway cocktail arrived and it was EVERYTHING. I love a strong, spicy drink and this one (made with infused Bacardi Maestro Rum, orange bell pepper, Sriracha, lime juice, simple syrup, cilantro olive oil and pepperoncino infused olive oil) was unusual perfection. This is a must-try if you like a kick in your cocktail.

For dinner, I dined on the Saffron and Black Squid Ink Risotto with Scampi and Carabineros Shrimp. I’m told the type of shrimp served with the risotto is some of the best in the world. The plate was indeed exquisite and even though they didn’t say salmon was in the recipe, it was. I think the Chef may have thrown it in for good measure and wow, it was nothing short of spectacular.

A beautiful plate of Ravioli was next, each different and intriguing. This dish really mixed unusual flavors; showcasing Chef Martino’s incredible talent. The first was filled with Gorgonzola and Pear, topped with Bronte Pistachio. The Second was stuffed with Osso Buco and topped with a fresh white nut sauce. Last, but not least, a raviolo Lobster, topped with Fresh Tomato Sauce and Scampi. Honestly, it’s impossible for me to pick a favorite, but the Pistachio was a complete winner for everyone at the table.

After our pasta, Nick arrived at the table with all the ingredients to make a Kaori Smoked Old Fashioned (bourbon, simple syrup and a pre-smoked glass with cherry wood). Right before my very eyes, he whipped up one of the most savory, rich and smokey cocktails I’d ever had the pleasure of drinking. It was a fun visual and the taste was excellent, too.

As I was drinking and eating my way through the delicious journey, colors, images and art work appeared and disappeared from Kaori’s walls. All of it seemed to be in harmony with whatever I was feasting on at the time. Even the music matched the visuals. All of it together heightened my senses and enriched my dining experience.

Even though, Chef Martino wanted to keep feeding us (because that’s just the kind of guy he is), we reluctantly asked to wrap up, so he sent out the Kaori Coconut Chocolate Cake topped with strawberry gelato and grated pistachio. Decorated with fresh flowers, it was beautiful, rich and refreshing.

Our last drink was a coffee aperitif called Perfect Carajillo (made with Zafra Master Reserve 21-year-old Rum, Licor 43, an Espresso Shot and Edible Silver Flakes). It was rich, buttery and strong.

At the end of dinner, I took a quick photo with Chef Martino and said my good-bye’s but the funny thing is, I didn’t want to leave. After three hours of mind-boggling delicious food and gorgeous visual accoutrements, I felt inspired and a part of something really special, but alas, the weekend beckoned me. My experience at Kaori was nothing short of extraordinary and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Where:

Kaori is downtown Miami on Brickell. There’s street parking, but your best bet is the garage right across the street from the restaurant. It’s roomy and reasonable, which is hard to find in Miami these days. If you fully wanna enjoy the evening, though, I highly recommend Uber’ing it. Cheers!
