No doubt about it, South Florida’s food scene has become one of the best in the country. This year, I found myself indulging in some of the best cuisine I’ve ever tasted. As #Spotlight grows in popularity, so does my waistline 😂…

Honestly, though, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Cheers to all the restaurants who participated in 2018 and, if you know of a place I should try, email me — I’m always up for a new foodie adventure. Cheers to more deliciousness in 2019. 🥂🎉

New Years Eve. The evening of little miracles. Peel away the exploding fireworks, roaring countdowns and ridiculous resolutions and what you are left with is hope. Small human hope. The hope of better days, of fresh starts and perhaps, if you are very lucky, a kiss.Beau Taplin

What:

A beautiful brunch at Zucca in Coral Gables, where the elegant atmosphere can only be upstaged by the mind-blowing Pumpkin Ravioli. #ComeToMama I didn’t even know I liked “Ravioli Di Zucca Burro Salvia.” Don’t I sound fancy? 🥂

Why:

If you’re a professional brunch-er, you probably already know about Zucca; but if you just dabble in the game, this place NEEDS to be on your radar. The chic Italian eatery, snuggled inside the historic ivy-drenched Hotel St. Michel, offers the most incredible brunch buffet.

I know what you’re thinking: “a buffet?” I’m right there with you, but this isn’t just any kind of food round-up, it’s fresh, sophisticated and first class. In fact, you’ll have a hard time choosing between the mouthwatering Italian antipasti, homemade focaccia, yummy salads and decadent pastas, not to mention all the breakfast food. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, go a la carte or try a little bit of everything; which is kind of the point. By the way…

Brunch comes with a complimentary adult beverage. You can choose between mimosa, Bellini or Prosecco. I started my #Spotlight experience with a glass of Italian cuvée called “Ca’ del Bosco.” It’s one of my favorites. If you prefer craft cocktails, they have some creative ones, like “Take It Peachy” (which is dry gin white peach juice, lemongrass, lemon juice, orange bitter and Prosecco) or how about a “Venetian Bloody Mary” (made with grappa, yucca, bloody mary mix and tomato juice.) I was in it to win it food-wise, so I stuck with the bubbly…

And fawned over dishes like the amazing “Vitelli Tonnato,” thinly-sliced veal tenderloin over tuna emulsion with capers and greens. It’s a #MustTry and one of their most popular items on the menu. The “Bresaola Di Manzo” was spectacular, too, with arugula and shaved parmesan and both versions of the Burrata (tartine & salad) were total cheese-y heaven.

Zucca makes quite the impressive Antipasto Platter with Salumi, Prosciutto, cold marinated veggies, parmesan cheese and olives. Save some room for risotto, because they always have a special of the day. I tried the “Shrimp Risotto” with cherry tomatoes and asparagus, but it was the “Ravioli Di Zucca Burro Salvia” that really knocked my socks off.

One bite of their homemade ravioli stuffed with pumpkin (sautéed in light butter sauce and sage) and you’ll think you’ve died and gone to #foodieheaven. It’s officially my new “dead woman walking” dish. I can’t wait to go back and have some more. All the aforementioned plates are featured on the buffet; there’s also lasagna, Porchetta, Roast Beef and Prime Rib. Are you drooling yet? If not, the dessert table should do the trick, packed with every kind of Italian pastry and sweet treat you can imagine: tiramisu, ricotta cheesecake, creme brûlée, panna cotta and more. Decisions, decisions, decisions and if you can’t tell, I had a hard time making one. 😂

Brunch ended with Zucca’s glorious homemade Limoncello. I’m kind of a liquor snob, but this aperitif doesn’t disappoint. Not only is the food world-class, the service is excellent, too, and don’t mistake sophistication for snobbery. Everyone at Zucca is incredibly warm and friendly and you can tell they totally love what they do and that’s why it’s one of my #FavoriteThings. Happy Brunching!

What:

Falling in love with Persian food (again) and who knew Crispy Brussel Sprouts could taste soooo good!? #HolyFoodHeaven.

Why:

When it comes to Persian food, I don’t really eat it in Miami. That may sound strange coming from a girl who’s part Persian, but it’s my family’s fault. Especially my step-mom, Beth. When I go home to visit, she spoils me rotten with homemade Ghormeh Sabzi, Fesenjoon and Tahdig rice.

She also stocks the fridge with Tabouli (my favorite) which she buys fresh at a local Syrian market. When Beth’s not cooking, my dad loves treating us to Ali Baba, a Persian restaurant he’s been frequenting for more than 20 years. I always get the hummus, tahini, tabouli, Beef Shish Kebabs and Baklava for dessert. My mouth’s watering just thinking about it. Unfortunately…

I haven’t had much luck finding THAT kind of food in the Magic City, especially when it comes to quality. There’s always good Mediterranean around town, but there’s something magical about the food that reflects my heritage and it’s something my taste buds take very seriously. That’s why…

When I heard about “Fooq’s” through the foodie grapevine, I knew I HAD to try it. The intimate restaurant, which is snuggled into Miami’s Art & Entertainment District, is truly a hidden gem. Not only does it serve Persian food, it does so with European flair (mainly French.) So, with high expectation because of its excellent reputation, I showed up last Sunday night with bated breath and an empty stomach.

Softly lit, with eight or so tables, when you walk into Fooq’s it feels like you’re at a friends house. The decor, which is industrial-meets-Mid-East-Bazaar, is warm and welcoming, but what really resonated with me was the wonderful smell wafting from the kitchen. Hmmm… it smelled like home.

I started my #Spotlight experience with the highly recommend “Crispy Brussel Sprouts” which I thought could go one of two ways; really good or really bad. Lol. It’s not everyday I eat my greens because they taste good verses being good for me. Served in a beautiful bowl, the sprouts, piled high, are glazed in honey and come with green garlic yogurt. Sweet & savory, the dish is an absolute #MustTry. My server suggested pairing the appetizer with a crisp white wine (Terredora ’17 Falanghina, Campania, Italy).

Fooq’s has an amazing wine selection, that’s both sophisticated and affordable. Owner David Foulquier, who’s part Persian like me, curated the list to bring out the best in his cuisine. He’s also part French, so I’m assuming wine is one of his love languages. If not, he could have fooled me. 🍷

Up next, I had my eye on the “Local Greens and Goat Cheese Salad,” but opted for the special instead with fennel, olives, pomegranate seeds, french radishes, goat cheese and molasses. It was extremely fresh & fennel always adds such great texture. There were two pastas of the day, so I told my server to surprise me. A few minutes later, she showed up with an amazing potato Gnocchi in red sauce. I don’t often let myself enjoy carbs, but I couldn’t stop myself. I cleaned the plate. 😁

For my main dish, I went full Persian girl with the shareable “Kebab Platter” served with Kushari rice, mint yogurt and Sabzi salad. It was paired with a beautiful red wine (Remo Farina “Ripasso” Corvina Blend, Valpollicella, Italy.) I’d say it was excellent, but I think a better compliment is it tasted like something my step-mom, Beth, would make.

I was disappointed they didn’t have Baklava for dessert, but the feeling didn’t last long after the “Date Cake” was put in front of me. Hello, lovah (it’s chocolate hazelnut gelato, toffee and cream.) I’m not even a sweets eater, but this was #AMAZE.

I really dig Fooq’s and not just because it’s a nod to my heritage. It’s one of those places that makes you feel special with its quality service and fabulous food. It’s unique, provocative and not afraid to be different and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things and if you give it a try, I think it’ll be yours, too.

What:

Friday night drinks, light bites and live music at The Commodore — where nightlife oozes class and sophistication. Think “The Fabulous Baker Boys” (sexy nightclub movie) meets “The Dead Rabbit” (famous NYC bar known for its great vibe.)

Why:

I don’t miss the NYC weather, but MAN I miss the nightlife. When I lived there, it was all about finding the right bar with just the right amount of personality. I was always attracted to amber-lit lounges drenched in dark wood decor, featuring live jazz or cool cover bands. It was an intoxicating environment and part of what made my time in the city really special. Once I moved back to Miami, though…

My evening hours would never be the same. If I wasn’t working, I was busy coercing one of my co-workers and/or friends into finding a fabulous bar where we could let the day melt away. Family commitments, long commutes or that laid-back beach lifestyle always put a wrench in my invites. Even worse, if I wasn’t into dancing & debauchery on South Beach — I wasn’t getting any after-dark action, unless it was dinner & a movie 😭😴

My sad social life went on this way for years — until just last week, when I caught wind of “The Commodore” inside the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove. FINALLY, a place with the finesse of Miami and the familiarity of New York. Named after Ralph Middleton Munroe, an early settler of The Grove and a distinguished yacht designer, “The Commodore” specializes in live music, craft cocktails and flavorful small plates. The intimate space is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a good conversation or spend some alone time.

After work, on a rainy Friday night, I tucked myself into one of its yummy leather chairs right in front of the fireplace and sipped on their namesake cocktail, “Commodore Old Fashioned” — the smooth and spicy mainstay is made with Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Amaro Nonino and Vanilla simple syrup. I also tried the “Spicy Raspberry Collins” mixed with vodka, lemon juice, jalapeño syrup and fresh muddled raspberry. #FreshAndFruity.

Both paired perfectly with the gorgeous Cheese & Meat Board. The fresh Parmesan and prosciutto were my favorites along with the cornichons and marinated olives. The Ahi Tuna Tacos were just the right size and tasted clean & delicious, served with avocado, candied radish and roasted nori aioli. If you like sweet drinks…

The “Apple Basil Smash” is calling your name; made with vodka, lime juice, simple syrup and St. Germain. My favorite of the night, “San Remo”, is made with Bulleit Burbon, sweet vermouth, OJ, St. Germain, Campari and lemon juice. It’s not just unusual, it’s got a sexy taste that transports you to an exotic place. I also loved the grilled taste of the dry-rubbed Shrimp Skewers, served with cilantro and aioli. I’ve never tasted Arancini balls and boy, have I been missing out. Stuffed rice balls, coated with bread crumbs and deep fried. Yes, please. It’s a #musttry served in tomato jam and doused in Grana Padano (an Italian cheese that’s similar to Parmigiano.) Enhancing the deliciousness of the dishes, a glass of full bodied spanish red wine. The 2015 Torres Salmos Priorat to be exact. Hmmm…

If you’re looking for a place that’ll make you feel special in more ways than one, stop by the new, chic cocktail lounge and have a drink and a nosh, listen to some live music and remember, a quality nightlife experience doesn’t have to be a sweaty club-hopping, half-naked evening out drowned with overly loud music and that’s why “The Commodore” is one of my Favorite Things.

When:

Sunday – Tuesday 5pm-11pm
Wednesday & Thursday: 5pm-12am
Friday & Saturday: 5pm-1am
Live music is on Friday & Saturday: 9pm-12am
Happy Hour daily from 5pm-7pm

What:

Brunching at Mason Eatery, where dishes like Goopy Egg & Creamed Corn have shooketh my foodie world.

Why:

Tucked into the heart of Midtown Miami, Mason Eatery is light, airy and the perfect place to grab a quick, quality bite or enjoy a long leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner. Its laid-back sophistication is a breath of fresh air in a city where “more is more” seems to be an exhaustive restaurant theme.

The family-owned, Art Deco-inspired eatery prides itself on unique culinary cuisine, serving up dishes like Creamed Corn made with red shrimp & cornbread crumble. 😋 Mason also makes everything from scratch and I do mean everything. The salmon is killer: cured with salt and dill for three days, rinsed and smoked for six hours.

It’s nothing short of mind-blowing and beautifully presented in their Bagel & Lox with garlic cream cheese and capers. You can get it on their Mason Board, too, which also comes with 12-day, house marinated pastrami and ham. Mmmm… the homemade mustard is definitely something to write home about and I don’t even like mustard. I guess I’ve just never tasted the real thing. #BottleAndSell

If you’re a cocktail lover, you’ll appreciate their fresh take on drinks like the Mule with ginger beer & Cardamaro or go for the unusual with A Mason Grace with Rose’, elderflower and ale. If you’re more of a mimosa fan, try the watermelon; it was my favorite. If you like fresh juices, the pineapple is life-changing. 🥂🍉🍍

The mouthwatering ham n’ cheese omelette is served with a yummy latke and the Mason Salad (with a chicken add on) makes watching your waistline all the more enjoyable. As if all of that wasn’t enough…

My true love affair was with the Goopy Egg — Muenster cheese mixed with sour cream and bagel chips to dip with #ComeToMama. The chips are homemade, just like all of their bread. Speaking of… so was my dessert: two melt-in-your-mouth cookies (chocolate chip and double chocolate) and a delicious key lime bar. 🍪🍰

While Mason is perfect the way it is (especially their late night hours,) I hear provocative changes are in store. Until then, I’ll enjoy the inspiring food and the feel good atmosphere – it’s one of my Favorite Things. Cheers!
