NoVe Sushi & Bar

NoVe Sushi & Bar

What:

NoVe, 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida 33132

Why:

I have two words for you: Opera Tower. It is literally the most amazingly, delicious sushi roll I have ever feasted on in my life! It’s actually named after the building the restaurant is housed in and I’d be remiss if I didn’t express just how impressed I was with its gorgeous presentation and delicious ingredients (tempura fried lobster, asparagus, avocado, tuna, imitation crab, tobiko, scallions, mayonnaise, tempura flakes and sweet sauce.)

You bet your sweet taste buds I wanted to shrill out an opera high note after taking a bite (it was a carnival of flavors in my mouth,) but alas, I didn’t want to scare everyone; singing isn’t my strong suit. With that being said, NoVe is just one of those places: when I walked-in I felt instantly comfortable, like I’d just stumbled onto the best kept sushi secret in Miami. With a sprawling out-door patio and an intimate indoor dining room, it seemed to be the perfect place to enjoy any type of meal.

Before my fab aforementioned sushi roll, I started with three yummy drinks: Watermelon Margarita, Lychee Saketini and Forever Young (after a few of those, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t even remember your age.) While all three drinks were pretty, they had major personality taste-wise. The Margarita was my favorite; fresh, sweet and strong (just like I like my men.)

I started my Friday night feast with three appetizers: Seabass Fritters (lightly battered chilean Sea bass, drizzled with spicy mayo,) Beef Tatki (thinly slice filet mignon seared rare with ponzu sauce, scallions, red onions, and spring mix) and Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna (spicy tuna served on top of crispy rice cakes, spicy mayo, scallions.) The fritters were fried decadence without being heavy, the tatki was incredibly fresh and clean and the crispy tuna had great texture with a spicy mayo to die for. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but if I were a dead man walking, I’d go with the tatki. My photographer and producer agreed.

Along with the Opera Tower Sushi Roll, I also gobbled up the Rainbow (imitation crab and avocado topped with tuna, salmon, white fish and avocado with caviar.) Most impressive, though, was the Bon Bon, which is NOT on the menu. It’s an underground item; made only upon special request. It’s this gorgeous ball of spicy tuna topped luxuriously with avocado. It’s amaze-balls. Yes, pun intended.

For my main course, I had the sophisticated Cedar Planked Salmon (fresh salmon fillet marinated in sweet soy sauce and roasted on a cedar plank.) I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about fish on a plank, but the cedar roasted it to perfection. It was smokey, tender and sweet. It came with a few healthy sides. This is a great plate if you’re watching your waistline.

For dessert I had the entertaining and fiery Panqueque with Dulce de Leche flambeado. It’s a homemade crepe with dulce leche inside, caramelized sugar on top and it’s flambeed right at your table. After the fiery shenanigans, it’s served with a generous portion of vanilla ice cream. I’m not one for dessert, but it was pretty tasty, not to mention the fact it had some type of alcohol kick to it (and that always makes me happy.)

After my feast, I finally met Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada. For me, it was kind of like meeting a rock star. This guy is the real deal and has dedicated his life to studying and perfecting the art of Japanese cuisine. He’s creative and meticulous in the kitchen, infusing Latin and American fare into his. What’s more, he’s completely affable and fun in person (not to mention on his YouTube Channel.) From the food to the atmosphere, not only is NoVe one of my favorite things, it’s a place I’ll definitely frequent often. Cheers!

Where:

NoVe stands for north of the Venetian, so, yes, it’s off the beach, but it’s totally worth it and really, it’s a better location for locals. The restaurant is snuggled into the ground floor of the Opera Tower on the south side of the building. Parking is NOT a problem; with metered street spaces and a roomy garage. Plus, there’s a convenient valet literally at the back door of the restaurant…talk about curbside service.

When:

Perfect for night owls like myself! Monday-Thursday 5pm-2am, Friday 5pm-3am, Saturday 3pm-3am & Sunday 2pm-2am.

The Return of the 70’s-inspired Clog

What:

Swedish Clogs by MIA Shoes

Why:

I love me a good clog for two reasons: my mother was a hippie and always sported a pair with sexy cut-off shorts or funky bell bottoms, making me fall in love with their easy, breezy style. What’s more, I’m of Scandinavian decent (on my mother’s side,) where clogs aren’t just fashionable; wearing them is a way of life. So, I guess you could say my love of clogs is “in the jeans,” but they go with way more than just that…

Just ask the stylish crew over at “MIA Shoes.” The company is nailing the trend (yet again,) by bringing back its original 70’s-inspired Swedish Clog that originally made them famous. The beautifully crafted, Italian leather shoe (made of alder-wood to accommodate the foot for a great fit) is cool, comfortable and classy. They come in a variety of different colors and styles, perfect for any fashionista’s wardrobe.

Expressing the clog trend for “Shireen’s Favorite Things” was fun and funky with fashions and accessories from one of my favorite on-line stores, “Haute Glam Boutique.” Showcasing the versatility of the shoes was simple by pairing them with a variety of looks: a feminine sundress, funky wide-legged leopard pants and two eye-popping rompers. For me, it was all about channeling those hot outfits my mom wore so effortlessly all those years ago.

The SurfComber on South Beach was the perfect backdrop for “The Return of the 70’s-inspired Clog,” with its fabulous lobby, which is this great mix of art and furniture; evoking a hippie-slash-bohemian vibe. The clog trend isn’t just stylish, it’s so darn comfy you’ll never want to take them off and that’s why they’re one of my favorite things.

Where:

You can find “MIA Shoes” on Twitter & Instagram: @shop_miashoes or shop the blog looks on-line at www.miashoes.com.

When:

I love sporting the clog trend on the weekend when I’m just lounging around or when I’m out to lunch/brunch, but still keeping things fashionable. Also, over the last three weeks I’ve been hobbling around on crutches after knee surgery and the Swedish Clog has been my go-to shoe! Clogs and crutches? Bring it on, baby!

Shireen’s Spotlight: La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel Miami

La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel Miami

La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel Miami

La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel Miami

La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel Miami

What:

El Mercado de San Miguel, 301 North Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida 33132

Why:

What an amazing treat! I absolutely fell in love with “La Feria Del Mercado de San Miguel” on the most perfect South Florida fall night. The market, which is snuggled under a gi-normous luxury tent, glows with magic from amber-colored hanging lights, great music, delicious food and energetic people. It’s a food-topia not to be missed!

The concept hails from Madrid, but it’s popping up right here in Miami until the end of January. Style-wise, the contemporary food festival is reminiscent of an old school carnival, with upscale modern food carts and a beautiful, bustling bar in the middle of it all. I went last Friday night and the place was buzzing with weekend vibes.

After a nice glass of red wine, my photographer and I contemplated which carts we would dine from. With so many amazing and affordable choices, we had a hard time making our final picks. In the end, we decided to try a little bit of everything. I mean, when in Rome, right? Or in this case, when in a mini-Madrid.

Our first plate was a Chick Pea bowl; a mix of tangy, pickled goodness. It came with a variety of olives, peppers, artichokes and frankly, anything else I would personally garnish a Bloody Mary or Dirty Martini with. It was absolute salt heaven! The flat bread veggie pizza, which was my favorite dish of the evening, was baked to perfection.

I also tried a mini helping of a rich and creamy Seafood Paella. Next up, two decadent cutting boards of meat. I can’t help it, I grew up on a ranch and sometimes, it’s just not a meal unless it’s meaty. Both the sausage and steak had amazing flavor and were served with potatoes and sautéed veggies. There wasn’t an empty plate on the table when we were through.

The reason I love this concept: it’s different and interactive. Not just because of the people around you and the food, but the location, too. It’s a perfect way to change up a night out on the town and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Where:

Smack dab downtown Miami at Bayfront Park. Parking is always tricky in this part of town, but luckily there’s a big parking garage just north of the pop-up market that’s extremely affordable or why not just Uber or cab it? So you can truly enjoy the festivities. 🍷😃 Ladies, wear your walking shoes!

When:

Sunday-Thursday 10am-10pm, Friday & Saturday 10am-12am. Make plans now! The market is only popping-up until January 31st.

Prices range depending on the plate: tapas $2-$5, main dishes $8 and up, adult beverages $8. You’re looking at about $18 dollars for a meal with a soft drink.

Celebrate life…don’t just celebrate festivals! Make a commitment to enjoy every moment, so that your journey becomes a Festival of Joy.RVM

Shireen’s Spotlight: The Grill at Bal Harbour

The Grill at Bal Harbour

The Grill at Bal Harbour

The Grill at Bal Harbour

The Grill at Bal Harbour

What:

The Grill at Bal Harbour, 9700 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour Florida 33154

Why:

Warm, welcoming and beyond delicious food; “The Grill at Bal Harbour” is by far one of the best restaurants in Miami. They just get it and to top it all off, it’s snuggled into one of the best shopping locations in the country, Bal Harbour Shops.

After featuring the latest and greatest in fall fashions on Shireen’s Favorite Things this week, it was kind of a no-brainer to showcase one of the newest eateries there, too. My entire team was mesmerized by its location; which is perched front and center of the open-air mall, with a beautiful outdoor space and windows that fold down in the main dining area to enjoy the beautiful South Florida winter months.

We started our experience with a plethora of pretty and pallet pleasing drinks. Here’s the list: Hand-Shaken Daiquiri, Boulevardier, Paloma, Coastal View and Italian Soda. “The Coastal View” (made with chareau aloe liqueur, bombay sapphire gin, lime juice, ginger ale and fresh rosemary) and the “Italian Soda” (made with campari, solerno blood orange liqueur, fresh lemon juice and club soda) were my absolute favorites. Both were fresh, clean and unusual.

Also, if you’re a sucker for a great margarita, “The Grill” has definitely perfected its recipe; with just the right amount of sweet/sour and an amazingly frothy top. You’ll be hard-pressed to have just one. I’m originally from New Mexico, where we’ve perfected the drink, but this one is as good as it gets for me.

We started our appetizers with the melt in your mouth “Heavenly Biscuits” (with salted butter and a side of honey,) “Deviled Eggs,” better than any southerner could make, “Ahi Tuna Tartare” (served with ciabatta and avocado,) “Campechana” (mexican-style seafood with jumbo lump crab, shrimp, and octopus) and “Chopped Vegetable Salad” (with avocado, roasted beets, grapes, egg, macadamia nuts and fresh herbs.) The tartare was diced perfectly, the seafood cocktail had a great kick to it and man, the salad had the yummiest dressing.

Our main courses were just as tasty. The “Blackened Rib-Eye” (hard-wood grilled with vine ripe tomatoes and blue cheese) provided an interesting table dynamic. I thought I might lose a limb gobbling up my share. It was OUTSTANDING. The “USDA Prime Center-Cut Filet” was great, too, with a more simple straight-forward taste. The filet was served with a delicious mound of whipped mashed potatoes and a hefty pile of buttery broccoli (be still my beating heart.)

For dessert, the “Hot Fudge Sunday” (with sugar roasted pecans) was decadent, but it was the “Tres Leches” (with fresh fruit) that had everyone at the table moaning and groaning with sheer delight. From the excellent presentation, quality and taste of the food, not to mention the exceptional service, “The Grill at Bal Harbour” is definitely one of my favorite things.

Where:

Located on the second floor of the Bal Harbour Shops, it’s easy to access from both sides of the property. Parking is a breeze, too. They have valet at the front and a roomy garage in the back. Be sure and keep your parking ticket handy, though, as they’ll validate/stamp it if you’re a restaurant patron. Cheers!

Fall into Fashion Shireen Sandoval

Fall into Fashion Shireen Sandoval

What:

Bal Harbour Shops, 9700 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour, Florida 33154

Why:

When it comes to fall fashion, Bal Harbour Shops knows how to serve-up world class luxury. Along with celebrating its 50th year in the retail biz, the legendary outdoor shopping center is adding new stores like “Maison Goyard” and showcasing redesigned boutiques by “Van Cleef & Arpels” and “Valentino.”

They’re even taking a bite out of French food by opening “Le Zoo” (replacing the once-popular La Goulue bistro.) The new eatery is famed-restauranteur Stephen Starr’s second brainchild at the shops; the first is his beyond decadent and extra yummy, Makoto.

Whether it’s food, fashion or just being plain ol’ fabulous, getting the scoop on where a South Florida fashionista should be dining and what they should be donning (during our cooler winter months,) was easy with some help from Sarah Harrelson, the Editor-in-Chief of Bal Harbour Magazine.

“Lace is everything,” Sarah explains. “Whether it’s your full ensemble or just in the details, it’s definitely on trend,” she says. Speaking of, this fall clothing is simple, but details are luxurious. The “Ermanno Scervino” boutique helped me express the trend perfectly with a beautiful black cashmere/silk blended camisole and matching cardigan sweater (both detailed with lace,) paired with a flared down skirt. Bold accessories and leopard spotted shoes added major pizzaz.

Sling backs, proper heels and of course, the all-purpose bootie are must-have’s when it comes to fall footwear. “The Webster Miami” is always one step ahead when it comes to shoe trends; highlighting mixed textures (leather, grommets and suede, just to name a few.) I fell in love with their “Christian Dior” black leather bootie with a sexy, clear lucite heel. Pairing it with a petite, animal print Saint Laurent purse made sense because I wanted it to easily compliment their OMG bright red Dior coat. (Kill me now, because I’ll go straight to fashion heaven.)

Last but not least, the beautiful ladies at “Gee Beauty” schooled me on hair and make-up trends. This season it’s all about a wow brow. Not only should brows be big and bushy, they should also be warm and soft (think light brown.) For your hair, a high-pony has splashed its way across almost every major runway at Paris Fashion Week. It’s a look that’s always sleek and glamorous; complementing a variety of fall and winter clothing styles.

Contouring (thanks to the Kardashian’s,) is still at the forefront of make-up and colored eye-liner is all the rage, too. If you’re extra daring, you can wear one color on the top of the eyelid and another color on the bottom. Gold shimmery eye-shadow is also on trend. My fall must-have’s? Something lace, a cool bootie, a high-pony and a big brow. Happy fall shopping fashionistas!

Where:

The Bal Harbour Shops are located in one of my favorite places in Miami-Dade County, the Village of Bal Harbour. Tucked neatly in between Sunny Isles and Surfside, it boasts amazing condo buildings, beautiful hotels, palm tree-lined streets and well, the ocean isn’t all that bad either. 😁

The open-air shopping center is definitely a highlight; with more than a lion’s share of luxury shops, department stores and restaurants to experience. You can easily make a day of it; there’s self-parking or valet to boot (a stylish one I hope.)

When:

Monday-Saturday 10am-9pm, Sunday Noon-6pm (department store hours may vary.)
