Shireen's Spotlight: Antica Mare

What:

Antica Mare (Tuscan restaurant & bar + wine shop) 7999 NE Bayshore Court, Miami, Florida 33138

Why:

When I walked into “Antica Mare,” the first thing I said was: “Who knew?” The place has a dazzling location with a direct view of the bay and is snuggled inside a new luxury building on 79th Street. I had no idea it was there…

Even better, it’s right by Channel 7 and the Deco Drive Studios. When I have a dinner break (which is not often), I can actually have a fabulous meal! Speaking of, I started my Spotlight at the bar with something I haven’t had in years, a “Green Apple Martini”… 😋

Don’t judge me. I showed up for my Spotlight way early and the bartender, who gave me his undivided attention, told me to order whatever my heart desired and to be honest, the drink was pretty amazing. Sweet and savory.

Before dinner, I decided to take advantage of the view and sit outside on the restaurant’s large veranda. Oh my — the weather was perfect and so was the wine. My spirited waiter chose a crisp Chardonnay to go with my first appetizer, the unique and tasty “Capesante con Passata di ceci” (seared scallops atop chickpea puree.) This is a MUST-TRY: it’s unusual and delivers a great balance of savory flavors.

Next up, a little red wine and some “Polpette toscane” (classic Tuscan meatballs with tomato sauce). This is the kind of dish everyone will love. I mean, who doesn’t wanna gobble up some meatballs smothered in red sauce? This appetizer is clean, simple and extra delicious.

I tried the Spinach & Ricotta Cheese Ravioli with traditional Tuscan meat sauce for my first main course. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a total pasta freak. I love it and could eat it every single day of my natural born life. This plate was no exception. It was absolutely divine, but… the real star of the show?

The “Carre d’agnello arrosto alla Toscana” (Tuscan Oven Roasted Rack of Lamb seasoned with Sage & Rosemary) was beyond succulent. The plate was served with fresh sautéed veggies and braised lentils. If you’re a meat lover, this is your ticket to mouthwatering heaven.

I didn’t have a lot of room for dessert, but I couldn’t pass on a petite helping of classic Tiramisu (with layers of Marscarpone cream and fresh strawberries). It was the perfect ending to an early Sunday dinner.

So, for right now, Antica Mare is a hidden gem on the bay, but not for long. Its delicious food, along with an amazing view, is why it’s one of my new favorite things and I’m sure it’s next on your radar, too.

Where:

Antica Mare is on 79th Street inside the ShoreCrest Club building right on the bay. It’s just before the bridge if you’re headed East and just after the bridge if you’re headed West. You’ll need to drive behind the building and then around it to get to the restaurant. They have blue and white signs directing you to valet as well as the entrance. Cheers!

The Spring Trend Report with Neiman Marcus/Fort Lauderdale featuring stylist, Ken Downing (Fashion Director & Senior Vice President of Neiman Marcus stores.)

Why:

Spring is always my favorite fashion season of the year. I adore the lively colors, interesting textures and whimsical ways designers breathe new life into all things feminine, flouncy and frilly.

It’s also a time when styling guru Ken Downing of Neiman Marcus makes his way to Florida for his annual Spring Runway Report. I love Ken for so many reasons, but mainly, because he doesn’t make fashion complicated. Although he embraces what’s “in style,” he also loves individuality and doesn’t shy away from the interesting and provocative.

Fresh from Paris Fashion Week, Ken told me: “It’s all about lace, lace, lace and more lace.” And, it’s not just about cocktail or evening lace, it’s a daytime look, too. The trend is so strong, it’ll be all the rage in the Fall.

“Eclectic, almost eccentric” is how Ken describes what he’s been seeing on fashion runways around the world. “It’s not about being perfect head-to-toe,” he muses, “it’s also about having one little thing off-kilter, because that’s what personal style is.”

Even though I like lace, I’m also enchanted with the latest tapestries, baroque materials, appliqués, embellishments and flower patterns designers seem to be favoring. It was the inspiration behind the “Garden Party” theme of the blog. Not only that, I love me a good bubbly skirt and the fact that dresses are now being made in that same spirit — well, it makes me one happy fashionista.

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight, as Ken takes us behind the scenes of his Spring Runway Report (the clothes, accessories and shoes are to die for). His creative stylings are a mix of romance and intrigue with an opulent twist. Think Frida Kahlo meets boho glam and that’s why “Garden Party” is one of my favorite things.

Shireen's Spotlight: Coya Miami

What:

Coya Miami 999 Brickell Avenue, Miami, Florida 33131

Why:

When I arrived at Coya in downtown Miami last week, it was a complete madhouse (in a good way). The place was packed and totally buzzing with Friday night energy. Even though I had heard it was one of the hottest tickets in town for dinner, man, I had no idea! The bold and the beautiful of Miami had officially found their new hot spot.

The restaurant itself, which serves Peruvian food with a contemporary twist, is just as sexy as the crowd that frequents it. The main dining room, which is flanked with a Ceviche Counter, is decorated in velvety yellows, brushed ceramic tiles, black and cream marbling and cast iron detailing.

I decided to have dinner in Coya’s famous Pisco Bar. It’s decorated in bold colors, rich textures and moody lighting. My first drink of the night was a clean, classic and extra frothy “Pisco Sour” — they obviously know how to whip up their signature Peruvian cocktail. Next up…

The “Nikkei Smash” (a whiskey-based drink served in a copper mug). It was strong enough for a man, but dressed to seduce a woman. The “Miami Elixir” (made with vodka, falernum, pomegranate and fresh lemon juice) was pretty and packed a major punch. 😋

For starters, I tried two Peruvian Sashimi plates: “Pez Limon” (with yellowtail, green chili and radish) and “Atun Nikkei” (yellowfin tuna, ginger and chili salsa). Both were fresh with a spicy kick. I also had a small dish (an appetizer portion) of “Tacos de Salmon” with tomato and avocado. They were bite-sized perfection.

I was totally pumped to try one of their Iron Pot dishes. I went with the “Cazuelas Langosta” (cazuelas means “cooking pot” in English) filled with lobster, rice, watercress and salsa. Last but definitely not least, I feasted on the mind-blowing “Pescado Entero” (their whole crispy catch of the day) with a bowl of veggies. I loved its dramatic presentation filled with fried fishy goodness. It was EVERYTHING.

At the end of the night, I was escorted to Coya’s private lounge (for members only). The intimate gathering was geared toward live music, mingling guests and of course, drinks and dinner. I mean…

Who needs dessert when you have delicious food, a beautiful crowd and mystery behind an exclusive door? That’s why Coya Miami is definitely one of my new favorite things. Oh, and that fish, though!

Where:

Coya is located in downtown Miami on Brickell Avenue. Parking is always tough in this area but luckily, the restaurant offers valet on the North side of the building.

What:

The Little Farm House — a unique and whimsical event space.

Why:

When I first stepped through the gates of “The Little Farm House,” I was transported into the most amazing tropical oasis. It was so lovely, it was actually hard to believe I was smack-dab in the middle of the Magic City, but I was. (More specifically, on the outskirts of Little Haiti alongside Miami’s Little River.)

The lush greenery, main house, six cabins, boathouse and myriad of farm animals make the place beyond enchanting and one of the most unique EVENT SPACES I’ve ever seen. Social gatherings, weddings, showers, parties, television and movie shoots, they do it all and…

While the place has definitely made a name for itself on a national level (hosting photo shoots for British Vogue, H&M and Urban Outfitters), its owner, Gabriella von Rosen, wants locals to know about “A Hidden Gem,” too.

“The Little Farm House,” which was built back in the 1920’s, is the epitome of Shabby Chic style mixed with a Key West kind of charm. In other words, it’s my kind of place! It’s also used as an animal sanctuary, where furry friends are nursed to health and adopted into loving homes.

Every corner of the property is a new mystery waiting to be discovered: antique furniture, vintage decor, gorgeous chandeliers and the kind of natural peacefulness that relaxes the mind and calms the spirit.

When I was there I spotted a manatee in the river, petted Phoebe the baby goat and was curiously followed around by Becca, a spirited pot-belly pig. Not to mention the ducks, chickens, iguanas, five cats and a sweet rescue dog. The place is so big (almost an acre) the animals wander about virtually undetected.

I also explored the themed cabins (the bar and lounge were my favorite) and imagined what it would be like to live in the Main House (for me, that’s the ultimate compliment). “When can I move in?” I jokingly asked Gabby. She just smiled sweetly – I’m sure she gets that a lot.

Matching the boho, gypsy spirit of “A Hidden Gem” fashion-wise was easy with dresses designed by Tanya Marie. I adore the way she uses bold materials and rich textures; giving her pieces a creative pizazz you just don’t really see anymore. When you wear a dress made by Tanya Marie, you stand-out for all the right reasons.

The special moments in life are so few and far between, enjoying and capturing them at a place like the “Little Farm House” will make your memories all the more rare and unique and that’s why “A Hidden Gem” is one of my favorite things.

What:

Body Details (Laser Hair Removal) & its new midtown location: 45 NE 36th Street, Miami, Florida 33137

Why:

I’m no stranger to “laser” (said in my best Dr. Evil voice with air quotes). In fact, I actually tried it back in the day when it first came out. YES, I’m old and YES, it hurt. The experience was so traumatizing it’s burned into my brain like a bad break-up.

I did four agonizing sessions in the back of a high-end hair salon in Indianapolis, Indiana (my second television market) with one of my best friends, Jordana Green, who was also a young, budding journalist at the time. Despite the esthetician giving us squeezy balls (for both hands) to combat the pain…

We still took turns holding one another down (Jordana loved putting me in a Half Nelson), yelling things like: “Beauty is pain!” “Hair free is fabulous” and “You go girl, get rid of that man hair!!” It was absolute torture.

After we were done getting snapped, crackled and popped, we’d head over to P.F. Chang’s in the Circle City Mall (by the aforementioned salon) to drown our sorrows in Cosmos, Lettuce Wraps and Mongolian Beef. Honestly, though, no amount of vodka, carbohydrates or sugary protein could dull THAT kind of pain.

Man, I gotta hand it to Jordana: she stuck with it, but I didn’t. After the fourth session, I pledged on my own beauty bible that I would NEVER EVER do laser hair removal again. I made peace with my hairiness and shaved everyday like a criminal running from the long arm of the law. It was exhausting, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. Fast forward a decade later, when…

My attitude ‘slightly’ changed toward laser, thanks to Doctor Martin Zaiac (dermatologist to the stars and us TV types). Dr. Marty explained to me the advances in laser technology and, more importantly, he told me it didn’t hurt like it used to. I trusted him (still to this day, the good doc manages my skin care and anti-aging regimen). So I tried it, but…

I didn’t stick with it. At the time, I was on a demanding schedule traveling the globe as an Entertainment Reporter for Deco Drive and making my way to Mount Sinai to “Greater Miami Skin and Laser Center” was challenging. I spent more time in Los Angels and New York City than I did in Miami. So, once again, I embraced my hairiness and waxed my way into ladylike smoothness at weird little salons all over the world.

A few years later, I would find myself at a quirky but chic medical spa in the Design District called Emena, where I was doing a feature story for Deco on a famous male pedicurist (who could give a woman a foot rub like nobody’s business). Not only did I fall in love with the foot pampering, but the spa, too. A few months later, I went back and signed up for laser hair removal.

Everything was going pretty well until I suffered an unrelated health issue. I got a virus (from out of the country) that triggered a neurological disorder in my body called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. After that, everything – just – stopped.

There was no time left for frivolities and the fight for my life began (sans laser hair removal). I started aggressive IVIG (Immunoglobulin therapy) and got my affairs in order. Luckily, a few years after my initial diagnosis I recovered, but I paid a hefty price for it. The meds wreaked havoc on my body (I weighed 90 pounds) and my skin, nails and hair were a disaster, too. Speaking of hair…

While I lost a lot of my locks (on my head,) prickles started popping up elsewhere. More specifically, on my CHIN! Talk about over-sharing. Sigh. I mean, come on?! Wasn’t almost dying enough? Apparently not, snickered the beauty Gods as they peppered my face with random, coarse whiskers on my upper lip and chin area.

I told everyone I knew (that would listen) about my hairy situation and bequeathed myself the nickname “The Bearded Woman.” Plucking, shaving, waxing, you name it, I did it all while bemoaning my fate and dodging any kind of “painful” solution.

Luckily, I happen to be a big fan of Annie Vasquez a.k.a The Fashion Poet, one of South Florida’s top fashion bloggers, who just happened to feature Body Details (Laser Hair & Tattoo Removal) on her Instagram. Annie faced her “man hair” publicly, so, why shouldn’t I? The rest is “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” history….

I made my appointment straight away at Body Details, opting for their new Midtown location. It’s really convenient and close to my house. Not only was it modern, sleek and comfortable, the staff was gracious, warm and welcoming.

After some paperwork, I had a consultation (which they do for free) with one of their on-staff nurse practitioners who understood my medical issues and knew right away what I had been through had made my skin extremely sensitive and prone to hyper-pigmentation. I’m not gonna lie, I was nervous. Actually, I was sweating profusely…

I think being sick and remembering the pain of my illness and my first laser experience (which was burned into my brain like a bad break-up) got to me, but I hid it. I just took a deep breath, laid back in their comfy spa chair and put my goggles on (they looked more like Gucci Sunglasses). And then, well, I got zapped.

NEWSFLASH: It didn’t hurt! They used a cooling spray just as the laser made contact. I couldn’t believe it. It was so fast and easy. A sense of relief washed over me — not just because it wasn’t painful, but because finally, after all this time, I was getting rid of something that made me horribly self-conscious.

I use humor a lot to deflect my awkward feelings, but I’m just a normal girl living in a shallow world of blogging, social media posting, television and modeling. Anything to bolster my self-esteem is BIG and much appreciated. With that being said…

Body Details knows its stuff. They have the latest and greatest in laser technology and they have a digital presence that I appreciate (texting and emailing appointment confirmations; you can even make one yourself on-line). I truly believe a huge part of their success is due to the fact they make it so EASY.

Eventually, my little chin hairs fell out of their nesting ground and my bearded area turned pink-y smooth. So, I tucked away my tweezers (more specifically, the ones I use in my car, because plucking a pesky prickle at a red light is uber-gratifying) and I came up with a new nickname: “The Hairless Hot Tamale” …

I love hot tamales, they’re my favorite candy and they’re smooth and delicious just like my chin area. 😬 Despite my long laser hair removal journey, I’m glad I ended up at Body Details: what a great experience. I can’t wait to go back and that’s why “Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow” is one of my favorite things.
