What:

The Little Farm House — a unique and whimsical event space.

Why:

When I first stepped through the gates of “The Little Farm House,” I was transported into the most amazing tropical oasis. It was so lovely, it was actually hard to believe I was smack-dab in the middle of the Magic City, but I was. (More specifically, on the outskirts of Little Haiti alongside Miami’s Little River.)

The lush greenery, main house, six cabins, boathouse and myriad of farm animals make the place beyond enchanting and one of the most unique EVENT SPACES I’ve ever seen. Social gatherings, weddings, showers, parties, television and movie shoots, they do it all and…

While the place has definitely made a name for itself on a national level (hosting photo shoots for British Vogue, H&M and Urban Outfitters), its owner, Gabriella von Rosen, wants locals to know about “A Hidden Gem,” too.

“The Little Farm House,” which was built back in the 1920’s, is the epitome of Shabby Chic style mixed with a Key West kind of charm. In other words, it’s my kind of place! It’s also used as an animal sanctuary, where furry friends are nursed to health and adopted into loving homes.

Every corner of the property is a new mystery waiting to be discovered: antique furniture, vintage decor, gorgeous chandeliers and the kind of natural peacefulness that relaxes the mind and calms the spirit.

When I was there I spotted a manatee in the river, petted Phoebe the baby goat and was curiously followed around by Becca, a spirited pot-belly pig. Not to mention the ducks, chickens, iguanas, five cats and a sweet rescue dog. The place is so big (almost an acre) the animals wander about virtually undetected.

I also explored the themed cabins (the bar and lounge were my favorite) and imagined what it would be like to live in the Main House (for me, that’s the ultimate compliment). “When can I move in?” I jokingly asked Gabby. She just smiled sweetly – I’m sure she gets that a lot.

Matching the boho, gypsy spirit of “A Hidden Gem” fashion-wise was easy with dresses designed by Tanya Marie. I adore the way she uses bold materials and rich textures; giving her pieces a creative pizazz you just don’t really see anymore. When you wear a dress made by Tanya Marie, you stand-out for all the right reasons.

The special moments in life are so few and far between, enjoying and capturing them at a place like the “Little Farm House” will make your memories all the more rare and unique and that’s why “A Hidden Gem” is one of my favorite things.

The Bugged & The Beautiful

It was a scary and shocking sight: my mother walking around confused, sweaty and mumbling something inaudible. I thought she had been acting funny earlier that morning, but I chalked it up to my vivid imagination. As the afternoon faded into evening, though, my mother’s behavior grew more and more bizarre. It was impossible not to notice it. Even though my father instructed me to go to bed, I couldn’t sleep.

I tossed and turned, thinking about the day in detail; replaying it over and over in my head. The questions mounted: had she hit her head, was she losing her mind or perhaps, even worse, had she been abducted by aliens and now, was some strange creature in her body making her do weird things? I was completely and utterly perplexed. Mind you, I was also young and a little on the dramatic side.

The next morning, as things got worse, my father started to panic (for the record, I’d never seen him that way.) Left with what he explained as “no choice,” he gathered my mother together the best he could and carried her to the car. When he placed her in the front seat she writhed in pain. It was horrible to watch and I cried without letting her see me. Through my tears, though, I noticed something odd about the way she was sitting.

When my dad sprinted to the driver’s side and my mother was left alone in the car for a few brief seconds, she strangely favored her right side. It was if her left hip was injured. Then, as if his wife’s very life depended on it, my dad quickly drove out of sight. Later we would learn, her life did depend on it.
