What:

Montce Swim 915 NE 20th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33303

Why:

Just like most women, I have a love/hate relationship with swimsuit season. I worry about feeling comfortable, confident and carefree. Adding fuel to the fire, as a fashion writer, I want my beachwear to be about more than just displaying my boobs and butt, I want style and pizzazz…

And because I’m on television, my bosses don’t exactly want me showing my lady bits to all of South Florida. I get it, but every year the aforementioned makes for a bit of a challenge when it comes to my blog. I’ve often thought about “skipping” over swimsuit season, but how can I? I’m in the land of sun, sand, surf and sexiness.

So, with a diet and work-out plan intact, I set out to find the most fabulously fashion-forward swimsuits of the season (preferably one-piece). Mama prefers a little extra coverage. After scouring designer after designer, I landed on Montce Swim by Alexandra Grief. I was immediately smitten.

Her swimsuit game is beyond STRONG for all the right reasons. Montce is all about quality and fit. Alexandra uses the finest materials and believes a suit shouldn’t dig into your skin, but rather lay flush and feature only your best assets. This girl knows her stuff.

She started her business in the living room of her apartment, making suits for South Florida beach bums and vacation-bound beauties. Her popularity grew by word of mouth and eventually she opened her Fort Lauderdale boutique. After that, the Pacific came calling; more specifically, Hermosa Beach, California, where she opened her second location.

Montce is worn by the rich and famous: Jennifer Lopez and Kendall Jenner, to name but two. The line is even featured in this year’s famed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition (worn by plus-sized model, Robyn Lawley). Which got me to thinking… how could I possibly put a new twist on an already terrific swimsuit trend?

I’m not exactly a beach girl (I know, I know — uttering those words in these parts is practically a crime). The truth is, I’m a desert girl. I grew up in New Mexico where the unforgiving sun and the blistering heat is a rich part of the Southwestern landscape and yes, we wear bathing suits, too. Albeit, in a more reserved, protect your skin kind of way.

The desert is this magical place, with its own distinct, exquisite, unbridled beauty and I knew “Desert Mirages with Montce” is exactly what I wanted the theme of the bathing suit blog to be. So (along with my Shireen’s Favorite Things team), I chose my favorite flatlands and built four fashionable ideas around them: Area 51 in New Mexico (an homage to my home state), Grand Canyon in Nevada, a Mirage in Morocco and the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

My Montce one-pieces consisted of cut-out’s, fringe and plunging necklines. I wanted drama, because in a swimsuit it tends to mean more color, material and design. A healthy dose of fantasy is the inspiration behind this blog and my team has a lot of it. I guess the main purpose of it all is about embracing individuality, uniqueness and realizing a good swimsuit can transcend any landscape.

For me, the summer season isn’t just about getting half-naked, it’s about finding a balance between sexuality and fashion. Not an easy feat in the Magic City.

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight as we highlight the latest and greatest in swimwear by Montce (color blocking, high-waisted trunks, push-up and padded tops, one-pieces with personality and beautiful bikini’s).

They definitely have something for everyone and that’s why “Desert Mirages with Montce” is one of my favorite things.

Where:

Montce is snuggled inside a two-story store front in a hip little area of Fort Lauderdale. Alongside a cute little restaurant called “Eat the Tea” you’ll find a smattering of shops, but none as provocative as Montce Swim.

When you open the door, you’ll find a shabby chic staircase leading to the second floor. Take an immediate right and you’ll see the sign on the right-hand side. It looks demure, but inside it’s all fashion hustle and bustle. It’s actually surprising and very energetic. They describe it as a “bathing suit speakeasy.” I’ll drink to that!

When:

Monday – Friday 12pm-7pm, Saturday 11am-7pm & Sunday 11am-6pm or shop on-line at www.montce.com.

The Bark & The Beautiful

What:

Salon Bark, 6274 N Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL. 33308

Why:

I can’t explain it, but when I first saw Rigby, I just knew he was my dog. He was sitting demurely in a corner inside one of the holding cells at the Miami-Dade Humane Society. When I spotted him, I walked up to the glass, flashed my best smile and cooed something sweet in his direction. Even though he couldn’t hear me, he wagged his tail and batted his eyelashes. I was in LOVE. I snapped a picture for good measure.

Strangely, he wasn’t the kind of animal I thought I would be attracted to. Don’t judge me, but I was set on adopting a small lap dog, one I could carry around in a pretty purse, bedazzle with sassy bows and dress up in cute outfits, but after seeing Rigby (his already given name), something about him changed me.

I left the shelter that day (after filling out the required paperwork and leaving a strong request to adopt Rigby) with mixed emotions. I was on the fence about getting a pet. I wanted a dog, but after my petite Pomeranian passed away (almost ten years earlier), I was irretrievably heartbroken and honestly…

I didn’t think I could bare a loss like that again, so I let fate take its course. A few days later, the good folks at the Humane Society (more specifically, the sweetest and most spirited woman named Dayle), called me and explained Rigby needed a couple of surgeries before I could adopt him. She promised she’d call me the second he was available.

I’d never adopted an animal before, so I took the news as a form of rejection. I was disappointed, but thought perhaps, it wasn’t meant to be. About a week later, Dayle (who promised she’d call again) did just that and told me Rigby was ready to be picked up and taken home. Picked up?!! Taken home?

I panicked.

All of these crazy thoughts went through my head. What if he doesn’t like me? What if I wasn’t ready to be a doggie mommy and what if he was nuts? My boyfriend, James, said: “Well, then he’ll fit right in.” We stopped by the pet store and got everything we could think of and then other things we didn’t think of and then things we didn’t need. (You know, just in case…)

Shortly after, we arrived at the Humane Society, where Dayle ushered us into a private family room to meet Rigby for the very first time. He was anxious, hyper and sweet. We petted him and tried making a connection, but he was distraught and confused. It didn’t matter, though, because I knew deep down inside that he was supposed to be my dog.

Rigby took to James much quicker, which confused me, but I took it in stride and loved him the best I knew how (with all of my heart). He had been left alone a lot, had scars on his arms from being caged and was desperate for love and attention. Well, he was definitely in the right place…

It’s only been four months, but it’s been a sweet, intimate and unadulterated love affair. Rigby has healed me, as much as I hope that I have healed him. We snuggle in the morning, take long walks, watch movies and live our lives the best we know how — together. He’s my best friend.

I also take an obscene amount of pictures of Rigby and post them all over social media. Yes, I’m that annoying girl. Which, by the way, prompted one of my good friends and designers, Carlos Marrero to text me about something: “You are totally going to gag over!”

Gag is a good thing when you’re talking to Carlos. It’s the ultimate compliment. Meaning, it’s so good, you won’t be able to breath and then, you’ll choke because it’s so fabulous! Carlos was talking about a place called: SALON BARK.

He told me: “Shireen, it’s a place where you can take your dog to be pampered and at the same time, YOU can shop for the latest and greatest in fashion.” Of course, I was confused and quizzed him. “You mean, shop for myself and take my dog?” I asked. “Yezzzzzz,” he chirped. “You have to check the place out. It’s so-o-o-o you!” He said, dramatically.

Salon Bark is the brainchild of Danielle Gaudreau (a pretty and vivacious blonde), who created the boutique-slash-luxury pet spa because she couldn’t choose between two of her favorite things: animals and fashion. Her boutique is warm, welcoming and chock-full of pretty much anything you can think of…

Purses, jewelry, clothing, scarves and whimsical house accessories. You can shop for your dog, too. Whether it’s a bedazzled collar, sassy carrier or chic leash, Salon Bark has something for every fashionista and her favorite furry friend. Hence the title of the blog, “The Bark & The Beautiful,” but that’s not all…

You can pamper your puppy with a Paw-dicure, Blueberry Facial, Mud Mask, Blow-Out or Hair-cut (which are just a few of the luxurious services Salon Bark offers).

What I liked most about my visit (with Rigby in tow), was Danielle’s kindness. I was beyond worried about taking my puppy on his first major field trip, but Rigby was welcomed with open-arms and spoiled in the exact same way that I would spoil him, if not more.

Danielle (and her husband, whom she calls the Dog Whisperer), really do have a special way with animals. It’s a rare connection that can’t be faked. Rigby was definitely the KING of Salon Bark, if only for a few short hours. He got treats, toys, kisses, hugs and well, the list goes on…

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight as we go inside this charming boutique where fashionistas and their four-legged friends can enjoy some major retail therapy, doggie spa treatments and most importantly, do it all while spending quality time together.

BTW, Carlos was totally right. Salon Bark IS my kind of place. After all, I only want the best for Rigby and maybe a little extra something for myself, too and that’s why “The Bark and The Beautiful,” is one of my favorite things.

Where:

The Promenade at Bay Colony in Fort Lauderdale. There’s plenty of parking, but if you can’t make it to Salon Bark, they have a luxury mobile spa “equipped with all the fancy, state-of-the-art equipment to make your dog feel like a celebrity.”

What:

BrewFish 200 E McNab Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33060

Why:

I didn’t know it at the time, but I was about to have the most perfect Sunday afternoon. With the sun setting, good music playing and “Conch Fritters” so yummy they practically melted in my mouth, “BrewFish Bar & Grill” quickly became one of my new favorite things.

Everything about the restaurant is easy to love: its laid back attitude, vibrant bar scene and most importantly, delicious food. BrewFish kind of reminds me of a place you’d find in the Florida Keys, but instead of driving hours south, this little nautical-themed gem is up north in Pompano Beach (about 30 miles away).

I started my Spotlight Brunch (they’ve recently revamped their brunch menu) on the waterfront dock tasting an Old Fashioned, Key Lime Pie Martini and Mango Salsa Margarita. They’re definitely NOT short on the pour at BrewFish; the drinks are strong and delicious, especially the martini. It literally tasted like liquified Key Lime Pie (made with vanilla vodka, simple syrup, half & half, lime juice and served with a graham cracker rim). Then…

The bar sent out an ice cold Stella, along with a shooter. (That’s a shot, by the way, and for the record, I can’t remember the last time I had one!) When they told me it was called “Buttery Nipple” (made with vodka, bailey’s and butterscotch schnapps), I laughed out loud. It was creamy, sweet and reminded me of days gone by. Before I had time to get too nostalgic…

A loaf of Bimini Bread made its way to the table. Hello?!! Where have you been my whole life? I’ve never tasted Bimini Bread before and holy smokes! Talk about buttery (beyond words) goodness. Crunchy Bahamian Style Conch Fritters and a bowl of Mussel Mania followed.

It’s NO secret that I totally have a thing for conch fritters; in fact, I’ve searched high and low for the perfectly fried “conch-coction”. And the winner is….BrewFish. They were really spectacular (crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning). Rumor has it they follow a secret recipe from the Bahamas. I love mussels, too, and their fresh garlic herb butter sauce is perfection.

Did I mention I was eating during “Bottoms Up Brunch”? Which means they offer endless Mimosas, Draft beer and Blood Mary’s for only $15 bucks. I opted for an extra spicy Bloody complete with Pico de Gallo. Speaking of, I gobbled up the lightly blackened Fish Tacos served with a side of fresh guacamole and more pico. (I’m from the Southwest, meaning I can never get enough hot and spicy!)

For my main course, I dug my way through a rack of Slow Roasted Baby Back Ribs, which my photographer (who ate the majority of it) claimed were better than anything he’s ever had at Flanigan’s (a restaurant he worships). It came with a side of Green Bean Casserole, better than my mom makes.

Last but not least, I ended brunch with a taste of the Florida Key Lime Pie (with raspberry sauce) and almost an entire Death By Chocolate Ice Cream Brownie!

What an experience. It really was a perfect afternoon…

That, eventually, turned into a crystal clear evening. Finally, after all the great food and even better company, I did something I don’t normally do…relax. Sigh. Take me back to BrewFish Bar & Grill because hands down, it’s one of my new favorite things.

Where:

BrewFish is a straight shot from Miami. Take I95 North and exit off of West Cypress Creek Road. Head east to NE 18th Avenue make a left and then a right onto McNab. You’ll drive over a bridge and BrewFish is on the right-hand side.

When:

Monday-Friday 11:30am-10pm for lunch & dinner
Saturday-Sunday 11am-10pm for brunch & dinner

What:

Air954, 1525 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304

Why:

Fresh off my “Perfect Getaway” from Key West, I blew back into Miami feeling rested, relaxed and ready to take on the world! I had places to go, people to see and prettying-up appointments to make. And that last part — well, it was at DEFCON status.

After a few days off of work, my hair was matted to my head from the blustery sea air, my eyelash extensions were shredded to nubs (because of an allergic reaction to new glue) and to make matters worse, I needed a new dress (STAT) for a special occasion with my bae. After explaining the aforementioned to my stylist, Jackie…

She told me point blank: “You need some major Air954 in your life, like, ASAP.” We both laughed out loud because man, was she right (per usual). That’s why her nickname is “The President.” Anyhow, I digress…

Air954 is every fashionista’s wet dream: a blow dry bar and clothing boutique wrapped into one. When you walk in, it’s got this beachy/boho/cottage-like vibe: it’s warm and welcoming. Before your blow-out (they offer conditioning treatments, too) you can sip wine, have a gourmet coffee; all while enjoying some major retail therapy…

They have beautiful dresses, rompers, beachwear, jewelry, purses, hats and chachkies for your house. (Everything I’m wearing in the blog is from their boutique and I wanted it all! Yes, even the jewelry.) The reason I think this place works?

It’s owned by BFF’s, Melissa Nichols and Kristine Davis; two fabulous women who appreciate looking and feeling great. Their #onfleek enthusiasm is palpable. What’s more, they realize not ALL blow dry bars are created equal. That’s why…

The dynamic duo has put a lot of personal love into creating something special, unique and one-of-a-kind. My visit was full of great conversation, incredible customer service and they spruced me up like nobody’s business. At the end of the day, they say…it’s all about giving fashionistas a “One Stop Glamour Shop” and that’s why it’s one of my NEW favorite things.

When:

Walk-in’s are welcome, but appointments are preferred 954-306-3367.

Air954 is located in Fort Lauderdale off Sunrise Boulevard. If you’re coming from Miami take 95N and exit onto Sunrise (East.) After a few miles, the road splits, so, make sure you MERGE LEFT. What:

Tap 42 at 1411 S Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316

Why:

Walking into Tap 42 is like taking a shot of party viagra! I haven’t felt so alive in months. The atmosphere is energetic and fun, to say the least. Sometimes, all work and no play makes Shireen a really dull, but fashionable girl.

Nonetheless, at the urging of my best friend (Jackie Kay), I booked a day blog (I usually do them at night) to enjoy the food, drinks and atmosphere at one of the most popular restaurants in South Florida. Not only that, it’s one of Jackie’s favorite places on Planet Earth; she’s been telling me about it for years. I just haven’t had the chance to see and taste it for myself. Until now…

With Jackie in tow, I started with three drinks: “Meet Your Maker,” (strong enough for a man, but made for a woman) with bourbon and a frothy top; the “Strawberry Cane Mojito” which is fresh, and fruity (a must-try if you’re a cocktail person) and, last but not least, I had to try one of their signature beers. I mean, it’s a beer joint. It was smooth, delicious and hearty.

The Crispy Asian Calamari arrived at the table first and was quite the sight, stacked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It was fried to perfection and served with a sesame ginger sauce. The Korean Chicken Lettuce Wraps were picture perfect and you can have them just the way you want. I added a lot of cilantro and chili soy vinaigrette to mine. It had a nice kick and tasted healthy. Speaking of…

If you prefer something on the more nutritious side (as in, you’re on a diet,) my fave is the Grilled Salmon chopped salad (it’s to die for). It’s a generous portion of fish served with a heaping helping of colorful veggies. The Citrus & Herb Grilled Chicken served with shredded kale and a killer balsamic is a close second. Both are great if you’re watching your waistline.

If you’re living for the weekend and wanna treat yo-self, you’ve gotta try the Bacon and Sweet Corn Guacamole. It’s served with a pile of chips that remind me of Doritos on crack, but Tap 42’s are homemade. Hmmm… it’s hard to top this plate. It really appealed to my Southwestern heritage.

In the mood for a little more meat? The Drunken Goat (lamb & beef) Burger with whipped goat cheese is just as delicious. It’s so juicy, I was licking my fingers while chowing down and the side of sweet potato fries (brushed with cinnamon spice) was the perfect accoutrement. It was so yummy, Jackie practically cried when the server removed the plate from the table because she wasn’t done!

For dessert, I tried the Key Lime Pie Parfait and Chocolate Chunk Bread Pudding. The parfait was creamy and sweet, but the graham cracker crust balanced it nicely. The bread pudding? Wowza! Filled with salted caramel, dark chocolate and cinnamon, it left me drooling like a two-year-old (albeit, a chic one).

The bustling atmosphere, the beautifully presented food and the fact that it tastes great, too, makes Tap 42 one of my NEW favorite things. Cheers!

Where:

Okay, Miami-Dade peeps…you’re going to have to get out of the hood for this one. Tap 42 is located in Fort Lauderdale. It’s a quick trip on the weekend and parking is on-site (there’s even valet). Believe me, it’s worth the trip. Maybe even two — okay, three. 😁🍺
