What:

Friday night at the hottest new place on Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale for some Burgers + Booze.

Why:

I showed up at “B Square Burgers + Booze” late on a Friday night; per usual, Miami traffic had gotten the best of me, but as I made my way down Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, the warmly lit “ready for the holidays” avenue eased my nerves and my stress started to dissipate.

My first glimpse of the place was from the car window. Really, I couldn’t miss it because of the sea of people surrounding the restaurant. The bustling bar easily overflowed onto the front patio and wrapped its way around the west side of the building.

As I made my way through the crowd, everyone seemed to be in good spirits; it was the beginning of the weekend, after all. BSQ’d (for short) isn’t just a gourmet burger bar, it also prides itself on serving contemporary American Cuisine, which means eating healthy or sophisticated is just as easy as devouring the decadent.

The decor is a mix of “industrial chic meets modern sensibility” and its laid-back vibe is paired with positive energy. I especially liked some of their catchy sayings written on one of their mirrored walls: “B-Original,” “B-Positive,” “B-Humble” and “B-Inspired” (just to name a few.)

After sitting down in a big, comfy booth, I started Spotlight with the Vegas Martini and Cucumber Gimlet. Holy poor, Batman! Both drinks were strong and tasty. The Vegas (made with Ciroc Peach Vodka, Beet & Ginger infused simple syrup and fresh lemon juice,) reminded me of the kind of cocktail Cookie Lyon would drink from the hit FOX-TV show, “Empire.”

(Camera fades into a shot of music mogul, Cookie Lyon, wearing a Roberto Cavalli suit, sitting at her gold-adorned, Donald Trump-like desk, elegantly sipping on her “Vegas Martini” while signing a multi-million dollar recording deal. The rich, red color of the drink matches her burgundy lips, which happened to be slathered in the latest YSL must-have lip color. After a gentle sip, she smiles coyly and slowly licks the drink’s sugary rim, knowing she’s about to make music history. Fade to black.)

The Cucumber Gimlet, on the other hand, is more like, say, something a jaded entertainment reporter would drink. While she loves her job, she constantly has to “work it like the rent is due” to keep up with the burning demands of her career. At the end of a long day, she doesn’t take the easy way out (a glass of Chardonnay,) she opts for a “Cucumber Gimlet” (made with Nolet’s Gin, simple syrup, fresh lime juice and cucumber.) Because even though it’s strong enough for a man, it’s made for a woman, too.

After a bit of daydreaming — okay a lot — two appetizers arrived: Szechuan-Style Shrimp & Calamari and Tommy’s Turkey Meatballs. Both plates were food-generous and I’m pretty sure the secret is in the sauce. The marinara on the meatballs was excellent and the Szechuan sauce was good enough to drink.

For my main course, I decided to go for a burger (when in Rome.) You can either fill out a nifty, make-it your-own-way burger sheet, or go for one of the many amazing suggestions on the menu. Since I’m a ranch girl from New Mexico, I went with the “Tex-Mex” (made with roasted poblano peppers, bacon, pepper jack cheese and green chili sauce.)

Instead of being traditional, I went with a side of sweet potato fries. They definitely nailed the green chili taste and the fries were ridiculously good. I can’t wait to go back and try more burgers! The menu features a creative variety: Nacho Mama, Ahi Tuna, McDuck, I Don’t Eat Meat and Short Rib, to name a few.

For dessert, it was double the pleasure with “Johnnie’s Apple Tart” served with vanilla gelato and my absolute favorite thing of the night, the “Strawberry Shortcake Matcha Boozy Shake.” The ingredients are a restaurant secret, but it tasted like I was actually drinking a strawberry shortcake spiked with vodka! For the record, I couldn’t really taste the alcohol, but the bartender assured me it was in there. If you’re not a drinker, you can get a virgin shake, too.

From the lively atmosphere, creative cocktails and mouth-watering burgers, B Square Burgers + Booze is one of my new favorite hang-out’s. I’ll meet you there, say, Friday night? Cheers!

Celebrating 20 years of great Italian food at Perricone’s downtown Miami.

Why:

When I first moved to Miami over a decade ago (as a young whippersnapper entertainment reporter,) Perricone’s was one of the first places I went with my co-workers from Deco Drive. Just like most new converts to the Magic City, I fell madly in love; the pasta was yummy and the ambiance was an intriguing mix of “garden oasis meets classic New York City steak house:” dark wood, twinkling lights and a bustling bar.

Mind you, it was all smack-dab in the middle of skyscraper central — downtown Miami. It was, and still is, paradise in the heart of a concrete jungle; more specifically, Brickell. Fast forward to 2016 and the eatery is celebrating 20 years of mouth-watering business. When I first heard about Perricone’s big birthday, two things came to mind: WOW, am I getting old; and I’ve gotta feature them on Spotlight. I’ve often wondered…

HOW in the world they’ve kept a great thing going for so long? Not only is Perricone’s a South Florida institution, they’ve also managed to grow and evolve without changing the original “je ne sais quoi” that’s made them so famous. Not an easy task in a town where restaurants come and go faster than the ebb and flow of tourists.

Since my very first visit all those years ago, a lot has changed. They’ve added a Market Place where you can shop for authentic, hand-crafted Italian delicacies: meats, cheeses, desserts, breads and wine. If you live downtown, I’m sure you know about it. They’ve also expanded their outdoor dining area, making the most of their lush, tropical landscape with a large open-air tent (that connects to the main dining room.) It easily transforms into an air-conditioned haven or an outdoor, cool weather hot spot.

That’s where I dined last Friday night on a beautiful Miami evening. I started Spotlight with three yummy drinks: “Sour Apple Martini,” “Classic Mojito” and “Frozen Moscow Mule.” All three drinks were yummy, but the Moscow Mule, which I’m told is a customer favorite, was smooth, well-blended and deliciously strong (made using a Kelvin Slush Machine.)

After drinking up the majority of my adult slushy, two appetizers arrived: “Baked Brie en Croute” and “Mussels Steamed in White Wine.” The brie (which is a whole baked brie wrapped in a crispy puff pastry, drizzled with warm apricot glaze and served with fresh fruit and crackers,) was spectacular and the mussels were just as delicious; light and succulent.

For dinner, I tried a little bit of everything, starting with the scrumptious “Grandma Jennie’s Classic Meatballs” with their signature Pomodoro Sauce and the “Catch of the Day,” which happened to be an amazing “Parmesan-Crusted Grilled Bronzino.” While I love meat and fish, my absolute true love is pasta. I could eat it every natural-born day of my life. With that being said…

I tried the “Penne with Grilled Chicken” (with olives, sun dried tomatoes, basil and feta). I especially loved the fact that it’s served in a garlic/extra virgin olive oil. Even though pasta can be hearty, it doesn’t have to taste or leave you feeling that way and this dish is the perfect example. My favorite pasta and dish (for that matter) of the evening was “Fiocchi Gorgonzola” (purse-shaped pasta stuffed with fresh pear and four cheeses, served with a walnut Gorgonzola sauce.) It was absolutely to-die-for. It’s on the rich side, but you won’t regret it if you try it.

For dessert, I savored Perricone’s signature “Chocolate House Cake” (made with rich, bittersweet chocolate mousse and chocolate cake, drizzled with white chocolate hazelnut crunch, with chocolate ganache frosting.) This is the perfect plate to share, but there are so many good desserts to choose from, I’d order a couple and play a game of round-robin tasting.

Besides all the usual favorites on the menu, Perricone’s isn’t afraid of stretching its food muscle, too; always coming up with the new and exciting. That’s one of the many reasons I love eating there. The incredible service, inviting environment and warm energy is top notch and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Brickell 15 SE 10th Street, Miami, Florida 33131. Your best bet is to use their valet. It’s fast and efficient and parking downtown can be pretty difficult these days or better yet, cab or uber it.

Saturday & Sunday Brunch at “Shooters Waterfront” in Fort Lauderdale.

Why:

Holy intracoastal views, Batman! When it comes to brunch on the water, it doesn’t get much better than “Shooters Waterfront” in the 954. The place is drop dead gorgeous, with an expansive outdoor patio that seems to be the heart and soul of the restaurant. I went last Sunday to try out their brunch menu and was pleasantly surprised.

I mean, everyone knows about Shooters, it’s practically a South Florida institution. Once noted for its famed pool parties and bikini contests, now (thanks to its new owners from Grateful Palate) the eatery has been reimagined with an updated “Hamptons-esque” look and a yummy new seafood-inspired menu.

When I arrived, I was quickly ushered to a table just steps away from the water. Although the place was comfortably crowded, I still felt as if I were having an intimate experience. The weather, which was beautiful and breezy, was perfect for a long and leisurely Sunday brunch. Just as I was settling in, champagne arrived for bottomless mimosas as well as…

A meaty “Shooters Ale” (perfect for our English photographer,) a delicious “Pink Lemonade” rimmed with raw sugar (made with vodka, lemonade & sour mix) and my favorite, the refreshing “Grand Raspberry Peach Fizz” (made with grand marnier, ginger, cardamom, raspberry peach liquor, champagne, raspberry puree.)

My jaw dropped to the ground when the “Norm De Mar” arrived. It’s a total seafood extravaganza (with rock lobster tail, shrimp cocktail, alaskan king crab legs, blue navy oysters, served with cocktail sauce, mignonette and horseradish.) The two-tiered mountain of shellfish goodness was incredibly fresh, decadent and definitely big enough to share (although, I would have been perfectly happy trying to eat it all by myself.)

The “Godzilla Sushi Roll” (made with shrimp tempura, ahi tuna, cream cheese, avocado, wake salad, chili oil & tempura flakes) and “Lobster Benedict” (Maine lobster, avocado & béarnaise sauce) were just as impressive. The roll is named after Godzilla for a reason: it’s a meal in itself! The Benedict, which is a nice spin on a classic favorite, had perfectly poached eggs with a buttery, soft center.

After all the aforementioned yumminess, I was a goner (or at least I thought I was) until the “Seared Brown Butter with Scallops & Shrimp” unexpectedly showed up at the table. O-M-G. This was AMAZING. My absolute favorite (made with corn risotto, seared asparagus & citrus beurre blanc.) The scallops were so fresh and so tender. If you couldn’t tell, I’m a sucker for a good scallop.

For dessert I tried three dishes: the decadent and crazy-good “Chocolate Fudge Cake” (which is five layers of rich chocolate cake topped with chocolate fudge icing,) the beautiful and artistically crafted “Key Lime Baked Alaska” (made with torched meringue, key lime, and coconut daiquiri) and “Caribbean Bread Pudding Flan” (served with bananas foster ice cream & brown butter flan.) I loved the flan, but everyone at the table hovered over the chocolate cake. Also, I’ve never tried Baked Alaska and for the record, I’d definitely order it again. The presentation was spectacular, too.

Besides our featured dishes, Shooters has an awe-inspiring ($30) brunch buffet. On it? Almost anything your heart desires: eggs any way, bacon, pancakes, waffles, fruits, salads, baked goods — the list goes on. Also worth mentioning: they’re hosting an impressive Thanksgiving Day buffet. You can find out more about it on their website: www.ShootersWaterfront.com.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to rest, relax and enjoy the weekend, “Shooters Waterfront” isn’t just an option, I think it’s the answer. I hope they don’t mind if I become a regular, because they’re going to be seeing a lot more of me for Sunday brunch and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Why:

I first met master mixologist, Jared Boller, at Kuro inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. I was totally blown away by his mad drink-mixing skills, so when he insta-messaged me a few weeks ago telling me about a new restaurant he jumped ship for, I knew it had to be special.

I arrived at “One Door East” in Fort Lauderdale on a Friday night after hosting Deco Drive. Despite only being open for a little over a month, the place was packed and brimming with foodie excitement. The open-air, industrial-style restaurant is built around a large, beautiful bar; perfect for social gatherings, date night or happy hour. It’s also tailor-made for a guy like Jared, who lives and breathes the latest and greatest in cocktail culture.

The drink menu, which is inspired by fresh ingredients from around the world, is perfect for the person who possesses an adventurous palette. In fact, each cocktail is named after a country and made to evoke an indigenous journey of taste. I took a sip of Japan, India, China, Thailand, Jamaica and Italy. Each beverage was creative, appealing to the eye and enticing to the tastebuds.

It’s hard to choose a favorite, but India was large and in charge (made with yellow curry, kaffir lime, juniper berry, grapefruit, indian tonic water and gin.) Thailand was an aesthetically pleasing light purple (garnished with butterfly pea flowers, vanilla, manzanilla sherry, creme de violate and Bombay sapphire.) Jamaica was candidly strong, packing a major punch (made with Jamaican jerk syrup, black soy sauce, lime and smith & cross rum) and everyone at the table went goo-goo over Italy (made with espresso beans, vanilla cream, amaro and Nutella vodka.) Yes, I said NUTELLA VODKA. My life will never be the same SMH.

The food menu, which is tapas-style, is divided into cold and hot (along with nightly specials.) That being said, the first cold dish to arrive was the fresh and delightful “Fluke Tartar” (mixed with fennel, asian pear, madras curry and watermelon radish.) The “Tuna Tacos” and “Beet & Blue Crab Salad” were yummy, but it was the “Scallop Crudo” (with cucumber and caviar) and “Beau Soleil Oysters” (with an outstanding strawberry mignonette) that blew me away.

On the warmer side, I tried the soft and smokey “Grilled Romaine,” the tender “House-Made Kielbasa” and the beautifully presented “Octopus A La Plancha, which comes with whipped chickpeas. The “Oxtail & King Trumpet Gyoza” (oxtail dumplings) and the “Crackling Shrimp” with sweet chile sauce were my absolute favorites, but the real A+ goes to the “Roasted Cauliflower Steak” (served with raisins, brown butter, capers and madras, which is curry powder.) This was so unique and tasty. Plus, who knew I liked cauliflower so much? My mom would be surprised; that’s for sure.

For dessert, “One Door East” really outdid themselves serving “Warm Doughnuts” (doused in pumpkin seed sugar and served with chocolate ganache and caramel.) Next was the “Key Lime Blueberry Cheesecake” with a poppy seed sorbet. Last but not least, “Sponge Cake” (with squash, apple, ricotta and pecan) easily ushered in fall with each scrumptious pumpkin-y bite.

What do I like most about “One Door East”? It’s all about balance. Meaning, everything is sensational. The drinks, dishes and desserts work in harmony, complimenting one another. Most restaurants usually do one thing really great. Not here — they do everything exceptionally well. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love it or if you just wanna hang out at the hippest new place in South Florida, “One Door East” is definitely the spot and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Where:

The restaurant is actually “One Door East” of famed Italian eatery, Valentino Cucina. Both are the brainchild of Chef Giovanni Rocchi and his companion, Elke Quintana. Even though the two restaurants are connected via a spacious hall, the concepts are totally different but equally as enticing. When you walk up to the building housing both places — to the right (which is west) is Valentino — to the left (which is east) is “One Door East.” Pretty cool, right?

Why:

“Bull Market” is the perfect kind of place to spend a lazy weekend afternoon; eating, drinking and just having a good time with friends. Besides being voted “Best Brunch” by New Times (in 2015), they’ve recently updated their brunch menu, providing good eats for a great price. Here are some of the mouth-watering reasons you should check it out…

They have a killer Bloody Mary bar (you make your own drink – just the way you want it). I take mine extra spicy with olives, bacon and cheese. Their Grilled Cheese Flights is a modern day twist on a traditional favorite and who needs a lot of money when you can munch on the “Millionaire Burger?” Okay, maybe you’ll need a few dollars to pay for it, but MAN, it’s mind-blowing.

I started Spotlight with three drinks: a tasty (and majorly stacked) Bloody Mary, a refreshing Mimosa and one of their famed cheeky drinks called: “The Panty Dropper” (made with Nolet’s cucumber gin, house made strawberry lemonade and basil).

Haha! I totally get it now. The drink goes down so easily, after a few rounds you’ll be doing waaaay more than just dropping your panties. More like dancing on the table and, perhaps, even scribbling your phone number on the bathroom wall. Bring a designated driver, so you can enjoy it. On the food side…

The Lobster Eggs Benedict was creamy and delicious (with Maine Lobster, freshly poached eggs, served on a toasted English Muffin). The aforementioned Millionaire Burger (Angus beef, maytag blue cheese, port wine sauce, grilled mushrooms and crunch onion frizzles) was my absolute fav thing on the menu, but the Grilled Cheese Flights (mini grilled cheese sandwiches served with shots of roasted tomato basil) were a close second. Yup, just like mom used to make, but way better. Don’t tell her I said that.

What’s weekend brunching without a heaping helping of French Toast? I had BM’s hand-dipped challah bread, coated in Captain Crunch cereal and topped with a house-made berry glaze. This plate is perfect if you’re a sweets-eater or you’re just looking to balance out something salty. I love ordering two dishes with my boo. He gets sugary, I get savory and we share. It’s the best of both worlds.

For dessert, you can’t go wrong with Bull Balls (doughnut holes served with caramel/chocolate dipping sauces and shots of milk). This is the bomb-dot-com and when mine arrived at the table, they were so fresh, they literally melted in my mouth. Nothing like some fried dough to end a great brunch.

Bull Market has a really cool, laid-back atmosphere, highlighted by a rustic bar look. It reminds me a little of the hipster bars/restaurants in Austin, Texas. Lucky for me, though, it’s in South Florida and serves up amazingly creative food, along with some traditional favorites and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Where:

Bull Market is located downtown Fort Lauderdale in an area known as Riverfront. It’s busy on the weekend, but street and lot parking are plentiful. I love making a day of it, because the restaurant is a block or so away from the IMAX Theatre. Brunch and a matinee? Now you’re talking. Cheers!
