What:

Alepel Shoes (my newest obsession)!

Why:

It’s no big secret: I’m a shoe girl! *But* here’s a major newsflash: over the last few years, I’ve slowed my roll — majorly. What I mean is, I just don’t buy shoes the way I used to. For me to plunk down a chunk of change on a pair of heels, sandals or boots, they really have to rock my world. I like different, interesting and comfortable…

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sitting on my back porch drinking Ensure and wearing Rockports. Instead, I’m just older, wiser and way choosier than I used to be. Back in the day, I loved a beautiful pair of classic sky-high heels in nude or black and would snatch up any style that fell under that category.

Matter of fact, you’d be hard-pressed not to find me in anything that wasn’t safe and basic. I wanted my outfit to do the talking and my shoes to be a subtle extension of what I was wearing. Fast forward a decade later…

Now, when it comes to my personal style, I tend to gravitate toward streamlined, classic clothing (on television I’m a little trendier), but when I dress for myself, I let my shoes do the talking and of course, the walking. 😁👠 With that being said…

Lately, I’ve been completely obsessed with a good shootie (that’s a high heel and a bootie combined.) Mainly, because I like my shoes to say something; preferably, something provocative and bold (without costing me an arm and a leg). After all, I’ve gotta keep feeding my retirement account so I don’t end up becoming the person Carrie Bradshaw so eloquently described on ‘Sex and the City’: “I will literally be the old woman who lives in her shoes.” Well — that’s surely NOT going to happen on ALEPEL’s watch.

The first time I saw a pair of ALEPEL’s I was incredibly impressed. It was a nondescript weekend; I was returning a batch of television wardrobe to “Koko & Palenki” in the Aventura Mall. Koko is my end-all/be-all when it comes to shoes and fashion. They have the latest and greatest in what you should be rocking fashionably on your feet and then some…

I remember the shoe distinctively: it was color-blocked (a metallic beige-y gold with black suede straps, a beautiful long heel and an orange stripe on the bottom of the sole that ran up alongside the back of the heel). I picked up the floor sample and sniffed them, like an excitable dog eager to make a new friend.

They reminded me of Chanel, but sexier. The quality was solid and the shoe was interesting. Not only that, they were pretty comfortable (especially for a high heel). If they were good enough for Koko, well, they were good enough for me. I bought them on the spot, which I NEVER do. I’m a thinker. I usually try it on, go home and mull it over. They were also super-affordable for a high end, luxury shoe.

About a year later, ALEPEL’s designer – Adriana Epelboim – who’s originally from Caracas, held a meet and greet at Koko. I couldn’t make it because of my work schedule, but she sent me these really cool gold and orange shooties, with cut-outs that laced up the front of the ankle. I became OBSESSED with them. Despite being two colors I’d never put together, they practically went with everything in my closet.

A few months later, I finally got the chance to meet Adriana in person at the Royal Palm Hotel on South Beach (to feature her in the blog). She’s a beautiful, soft-spoken blonde who’s creative, chic and artistic. Although Adriana is an architect by education, she’s taken her love of art, science and design and is “Crossing The Line” into new fashion territory.

Buildings, structures, shapes and patterns inspire her and you can easily see those influences in her creations. She says her line is all about “intersecting architecture and fashion into unique and comfortable designs.”

What’s more, each shoe she designs is bequeathed with something called “The Line” — a rubber injection on the leather sole that never wears out. “No matter how many times you wear them,” Adriana muses. (Take that, Christian Louboutin.) She also tells me “the line is the basic symbol of every architect, we speak through lines.”

Adriana’s designs are bold, sexy and interesting; pretty much everything I look for in a shoe. Instead of talking TO me, her shoes talk FOR me…of sophistication and worldliness. She describes the ALEPEL style as “elegance with a twist” and I couldn’t agree more!

Don’t miss Deco Drive tonight, as we get up close and personal with Adriana and Alepel’s new spring trends. I’m in love with the rose gold and mesh textures she’s using in her newest designs (pictured in the blog). Plus, find out how to customize your own ALEPEL shootie.

If you’re looking for a classic design with an elegant twist, ALEPEL is “Crossing The Line” one fashionable step at a time and that’s why they’re one of my favorite things.

What:

NoVe, 1750 North Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida 33132

Why:

I have two words for you: Opera Tower. It is literally the most amazingly, delicious sushi roll I have ever feasted on in my life! It’s actually named after the building the restaurant is housed in and I’d be remiss if I didn’t express just how impressed I was with its gorgeous presentation and delicious ingredients (tempura fried lobster, asparagus, avocado, tuna, imitation crab, tobiko, scallions, mayonnaise, tempura flakes and sweet sauce.)

You bet your sweet taste buds I wanted to shrill out an opera high note after taking a bite (it was a carnival of flavors in my mouth,) but alas, I didn’t want to scare everyone; singing isn’t my strong suit. With that being said, NoVe is just one of those places: when I walked-in I felt instantly comfortable, like I’d just stumbled onto the best kept sushi secret in Miami. With a sprawling out-door patio and an intimate indoor dining room, it seemed to be the perfect place to enjoy any type of meal.

Before my fab aforementioned sushi roll, I started with three yummy drinks: Watermelon Margarita, Lychee Saketini and Forever Young (after a few of those, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t even remember your age.) While all three drinks were pretty, they had major personality taste-wise. The Margarita was my favorite; fresh, sweet and strong (just like I like my men.)

I started my Friday night feast with three appetizers: Seabass Fritters (lightly battered chilean Sea bass, drizzled with spicy mayo,) Beef Tatki (thinly slice filet mignon seared rare with ponzu sauce, scallions, red onions, and spring mix) and Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna (spicy tuna served on top of crispy rice cakes, spicy mayo, scallions.) The fritters were fried decadence without being heavy, the tatki was incredibly fresh and clean and the crispy tuna had great texture with a spicy mayo to die for. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but if I were a dead man walking, I’d go with the tatki. My photographer and producer agreed.

Along with the Opera Tower Sushi Roll, I also gobbled up the Rainbow (imitation crab and avocado topped with tuna, salmon, white fish and avocado with caviar.) Most impressive, though, was the Bon Bon, which is NOT on the menu. It’s an underground item; made only upon special request. It’s this gorgeous ball of spicy tuna topped luxuriously with avocado. It’s amaze-balls. Yes, pun intended.

For my main course, I had the sophisticated Cedar Planked Salmon (fresh salmon fillet marinated in sweet soy sauce and roasted on a cedar plank.) I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about fish on a plank, but the cedar roasted it to perfection. It was smokey, tender and sweet. It came with a few healthy sides. This is a great plate if you’re watching your waistline.

For dessert I had the entertaining and fiery Panqueque with Dulce de Leche flambeado. It’s a homemade crepe with dulce leche inside, caramelized sugar on top and it’s flambeed right at your table. After the fiery shenanigans, it’s served with a generous portion of vanilla ice cream. I’m not one for dessert, but it was pretty tasty, not to mention the fact it had some type of alcohol kick to it (and that always makes me happy.)

After my feast, I finally met Master Sushi Chef Hiroyuki Terada. For me, it was kind of like meeting a rock star. This guy is the real deal and has dedicated his life to studying and perfecting the art of Japanese cuisine. He’s creative and meticulous in the kitchen, infusing Latin and American fare into his. What’s more, he’s completely affable and fun in person (not to mention on his YouTube Channel.) From the food to the atmosphere, not only is NoVe one of my favorite things, it’s a place I’ll definitely frequent often. Cheers!

Where:

NoVe stands for north of the Venetian, so, yes, it’s off the beach, but it’s totally worth it and really, it’s a better location for locals. The restaurant is snuggled into the ground floor of the Opera Tower on the south side of the building. Parking is NOT a problem; with metered street spaces and a roomy garage. Plus, there’s a convenient valet literally at the back door of the restaurant…talk about curbside service.

When:

Perfect for night owls like myself! Monday-Thursday 5pm-2am, Friday 5pm-3am, Saturday 3pm-3am & Sunday 2pm-2am.

I have this recurring dream: I’m driving along the sun drenched hills of Highway One in Malibu and it’s the most glorious day. I’m headed north to Santa Barbara to rendezvous with the man of my dreams. When I grow restless behind the wheel, I pull to the side of the road to stretch my legs and walk to my favorite spot: the ledge of the steepest cliff the road has to offer.

After planting my espadrille-flanked feet securely on the very edge of the rocky drop, I inhale the thick, salty ocean air as if my very life depends on it, letting the wind whip my hair and clothes around me. As I toss my head back, I throw my arms open and let the beauty of life wash over me. It’s undeniably my moment.

One that always reminds of the scene in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice,” when actress Kiera Knightley, who plays Jane Austen’s beloved Elizabeth Bennet, stands at the edge of the most amazing, awe-inspiring cliff with her dress flapping in the wind, contemplating the wonderment of life.

In the dream, though, I’m not wearing an opulent 18th Century dress. I’m in the chicest clothes: a crispy blue and white blouse, roomy buttery-blue slacks and a loose colorful scarf is tied easily around my unruly brown locks. The day is perfect; stunning actually, as the waves crash against the rocks creating the kind of soundtrack only Mother Nature can compose.

I sigh at my good fortune, as I’ve designed my life just as I’ve always wanted it and living it is a blessing. When I’ve had my fill of the seascape, I turn around, walk back to my car and drive off into the warm, golden-hued sunset and then I wake up: peaceful, centered and longing to make my dream a reality.

I’ve written of this very moment before in my blog, “The Elegant Espadrille,” when the aforementioned dream used to be somewhat of a fantasy. For whatever reason over the past year, it’s sunk its way into my psyche and now visits me on a regular basis in my most vulnerable unconscious state: while I’m sleeping.

I’m glad for my new recurring dream because my old one was incredibly haunting: a nightly torment of me vomiting thousands and thousands of black butterflies. For a solid year, I woke up screaming and clutching my mouth and stomach. The dream was so disturbing, I sought the help of a professional dream analyst to help me make sense of it.

She quickly reassured me that black butterflies were a symbol of good luck and a sign of deep and profound transformation. Man, was she right. If you’re a regular blog reader, you already know about most of the events that have unraveled in my life over the past few years: the loss of a child, a horrible illness and a painful divorce. During that time, things weren’t just changing, my entire life toppled over and yes, I transformed. Undoubtedly, for the better.

This year, though, the black butterflies finally flew away and my trek up the golden Pacific Coast Highway took its place. Coincidentally, it was right around the same time that I discovered Maritza Filomena Fernandez, the Founder and Designer of Filomena Fernandez and I had something serendipitously in common, despite never meeting face-to-face.
