A Totally Turban Summer

When I was the in the sixth grade, I used to style my hair in a long, hot dog curl. Not as in a ponytail; that would have been cute. Instead, I brushed it all forward as flat as I could get it and once it reached my forehead, I curled the entire thing upward to create mock bangs. Yeah, it was pretty horrible. If you don’t believe me, check out the inset picture of the blog. That’s me, in all my hair glory.

Mind you, I wasn’t trying to look bad on purpose. I just didn’t know how to do my own hair. Not only was it feathery fine, it was crazy curly, too. It was a complicated situation; one that my mother, who was born of Norwegian descent (and was blessed with the most perfect, stick-straight-slick-gorgeous hair,) didn’t know how to handle.

The twisted trend of the moment is top braids with loose wavy hair (pictured in the blog.) The goal is to feature your face by twisting your front hairline back. The rest of your locks should be tousled.

Braids are perfect for the Miami girl trying to beat the heat and humidity. It’s an easy way to stay fashionable and fight the frizz. Low side braids are in, too. They’re easy, elegant and perfect for a day party or an after-five event. The loose fish tail, also worn to the side, is more of an edgy, romantic, fashion forward look.

To get your braid to stay for a couple days, a holding product before and after is key. If your twisted sister makes it through the night, use a soft brush or a comb to tame fly-aways. Next day braids, which I love wearing when I travel, especially on long plane rides, usually morph into something more relaxed and casual.

Okay, ladies… it’s time to tuck those high-heel sneaker wedges in the back of your closet and give your classic Chuck Taylor’s their own comfy corner to rest in. This Spring and Summer it’s all about trading in your favorite tennis shoes for something called “Kool Kicks.”

The latest and greatest in the relaxed sports shoe craze is basically a recreation of the 1976 old school Vans “Slip-On.” The shoe, originally called “The #44,” was made popular by professional skateboarders and BMX riders in Southern California.

Fast forward almost thirty years later and the fashion world is adhering itself to the same style. “Kool Kicks” have a thick, white rubber bottom that hugs up the side of the shoe, creating a boat-like effect.

They come in a plethora of different colors and prints. My favorite “Slip-On” is designed by ASH. I love how they mix and match muted animal prints and then pop the heel tab with bright colors. It’s definitely a fashionable way to funk up your shoe wardrobe.
