Herve for the Holidays

What:

Hot holiday looks from Herve Leger by Max Azria located inside BCBG on South Beach.

Why:

I love the holidays and everything that surrounds them: food, family, festivities and, of course, all the fabulous dresses.

In fact, every Christmas/Hanukah, I relish choosing my favorite fashions for my annual holiday dress blog. Months prior, I shop my way through the Magic City, searching for the perfect fit and style.

Most of the time, I end up wearing something that helps convey where I am in life and what’s ahead for the new year. Yup, I’m definitely one of those women who believes your wardrobe says a lot about where you are in life.

For my last holiday dress blog, I tried harnessing my sexy side with Hot Miami Styles, in hopes of ringing in 2016 with a va-va-voom vibe.

I was aiming to feel alive again after a painful knee injury that required surgery and extensive physical therapy, not to mention a mini-relapse from a major neurological illness I suffered a few years ago. With that being said…

Now, I’m in a totally different place, with a more positive frame of mind and a healthier body. Since the bad mojo is behind me, my life has blossomed into something new, interesting and well, I haven’t figured it all out yet. I just know that I’m changing…

My fashion taste is, too. I’ve left behind a lot of the fuss, like my fluffy skirts and eccentric shirts (that I used to hide behind,) opting instead for the simple, sleek and sophisticated. That’s why “Herve for the Holidays” makes complete sense to me.

I’ve always been a big fan of Herve Leger by Max Azria and its famous bandage dress, but for years, I was intimated by the body-conscious appeal of the line, until I tried one on a few weeks ago.

Their “second skin” concept isn’t what I expected. Sure, it’s about highlighting the good, but it’s also about diminishing the bad. “Think of it as one big pair of Spanx,” said the person who talked me into trying one on for size (she knows who she is!)

The dresses are made of such quality material (a meaty blend of rayon, nylon and spandex,) it’s impossible not to have coy confidence when wearing one. What’s more, they’ve expanded their line to include styles with longer hems, more fashion-forward silhouettes and gorgeous textures.

The bandage dress isn’t just a seasonal investment, it’s a killer classic that’ll complement your closet for years to come and that’s why “Herve for the Holidays” is one of my favorite things. Happy shopping, fashionistas and enjoy your turkey day!

What:

DIRT Eat Clean, 232 5th Street, Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Why:

I love it when a good plan comes together and DIRT is exactly that. Healthy food is the trend of the moment and DIRT does it right. Not only has it captured the hearts of the health-obsessed crowd in Miami, it’s even won over those of us who think eating clean doesn’t taste good – because at DIRT, it DOES.

The food is fresh, fast and, believe it or not, incredibly delicious. I’ll get to that in a minute; but first, let’s talk about the atmosphere. The place is absolutely buzzing with excitement — you can feel it when you walk in. I went on a Sunday and it was comfortably crowded. Whether eating in or getting food to go, there was a constant stream of customers.

Inside, DIRT is modern, clean and warm; using bright whites and different shades of wood to create a hip and, dare I say, “happy” environment. What’s more, the open-air eatery is powered by 100% pollution-free energy and everything they use (paper and plastic packaging) is recyclable, compostable and/or biodegradable. Their motto: “We care about three things: people, food and the planet.” With that being said…

Their menus are perfectly placed right inside the front door, allowing you a little time to decide before you beeline it to the counter. Usually, I choose my spotlight menu, but instead, I let Chef Nicole Votano (who’s the bomb-dot-com,) pick for me. I think she automatically sensed my trepidation: while I like eating healthy and knowing what’s in my food, I don’t always like the way clean food tastes, but I was in good hands.

My usual menagerie of alcoholic beverages were replaced by a Matcha Green Tea Latte (lightly sweetened with brown sugar,) Dragon Fruit Lemonade (made of freshly squeezed lemon juice, house-made vanilla syrup, dragon fruit and alkaline water) and a healthy, local beer called “Regresa A Mi” (which translates to “Come back to me.”) Fermented with guava and hibiscus, it was unique, fruity and light. By the way, they even have wine on the menu for us drinking types.

The first dish I feasted on was the Avocado Toast. OMG! AMAZE. First of all, I’m obsessed with anything Avocado (I’m from New Mexico and it’s a staple there) and DIRT’s recipe is pretty close to what I’m used to eating in “The Land of Enchantment.” It’s simple and clean, made with grilled bread (from Zac the Baker,) smashed avocado, extra virgin olive oil and sea salt.

The Santorini Salad was basically a plate full of hummus (spiked with harissa) with a greek-style salad piled on top (local greens, tomatoes, cucumber, farro, chickpeas, lentil, olives and served with an herb vinaigrette.) The Spring Plate was a generous portion of greek yogurt, smashed potatoes, spicy grilled broccolini, herbs and shaved veggies served with your choice of protein. I had the quinoa-crusted fish of the day.

The Dragon Fruit bowl not only cleansed my palate, it’s officially one of my favorite things on the planet (made with dragon fruit, banana, pineapple, house-made almond butter and local wildflower honey blended with house-made almond + Brazil nut milk, topped with blueberries, banana, kiwi and house-made granola.) Usually, I wouldn’t bother with all the ingredients, I mean, it’s not like I’m gonna make it at home, but this was so incredible, I can’t get over it. Who knew?

For dessert, Chef Nicole pulled out all the stops with a gluten-free Rosemary & Sea Salt Chocolate Rice Krispy Treat and Vegan Hazelnut Olive Oil Short Bread with lemon glaze. Desserts are made daily, so they’re not on the menu. Just ask, though, and they’ll tell you what they’re serving that day.

For local farm-to-counter food that’s organic, vegan, vegetarian, grass-fed, gluten-free and paleo, you just can’t seem to go wrong at DIRT. There’s something for every kind of foodie and the best part: you’re not just doing your body good, you’re doing your tastebuds a favor, too and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things. Cheers!

Shireen's Spotlight: French 27

What:

French 27, 850 Commerce Street, Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Why:

Oh, Mon Cherie! French 27 is such a gorgeous restaurant, I was immediately smitten when I walked through its long, airy corridor. I was greeted by two lovely ladies standing behind a Baby Grand piano (which was serving as a make-shift hostess station.) It was flanked by red roses and a glowing candelabra.

The restaurant, which reminds me a little of La Grenouille in New York City, oozes drama: its rich textures and warm colors enhance its lively atmosphere. On the way to my table, I was whisked past a decorative pond with floating candles and rose petals. The romance in the place was palpable. Then, it was time to get my Spotlight on!

I started with the ‘Moulin Rouge’ (made with berries, St. Germaine, vodka and Veuve Clicquot.) It was crisp, light and my favorite drink of the night. The ‘Honey & Tea’, served with a petite pot of honey along with a lil’ dipper was charming (made with peach puree, jasmine-infused honey and vodka.) The ‘Champagne & Rose,’ served with a side of rose petal syrup, was extremely elegant.

My first starter of the night was the mind-blowing ‘Escargots Tartiflette.’ It was oh-so-buttery and if the puff pastry that was served with it were a man, I’d profess my undying love and run away with it — forever. The ‘Soy Cured Salmon’ topped with cilantro and Creme Fraiche was clean and healthy (more so than the Escargot.)

I tried two main entrees: ‘Chilean Seabass’ (with tomato confit, cured shallots and almonds) and ‘Mediterranean Turbot’ (served with a mint béarnaise sauce, artichokes and cherry tomatoes.) I was most impressed with the Turbot; I’d never tried it before and it reminded me of Dover Sole, which I love. Dinner didn’t end there…

I was asked to try anything my heart desired from the menu (btw, that’s never happened to me on Spotlight.) I made room for ‘French Onion Soup’ (after all, I was at a French restaurant) and ‘Moules Mariniere’. The soup had this crazy good puffy pastry smothering it and the mussels were soaked in a perfect Chardonnay sauce.

Last but not least, I saved room for ‘Strawberry Shortcake’ and the most perfect ‘Soufflé. I left happy and definitely NOT HUNGRY! ‘French 27’ is an enchanting slice of “The City of Light” on the beach and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

Where:

‘French 27’ is on South Beach in an area known as South Pointe. I remember back in the day when ‘Joe’s Stone Crab’ was the Lone Wolf in the neighborhood. Not so anymore! There seems to be new places popping up everyday. Lucky for us foodies, there’s street parking in front of the restaurant and they have valet. Cheers, or as they say in France: Bon Appetit!

What:

Ola Miami, 1745 James Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139

Why:

When you walk into Ola Miami, it’s as if you stumbled onto the best party in town. A lot of locals call this hot spot one of Miami’s rare, hidden gems. I went last Friday and the scene was incredibly vibrant, the energy electric and the food? It keeps getting better with time and frankly, who wouldn’t drink to that!? So…

I started the night by tasting three of Ola’s yummiest martini’s: a sweet coconut concoction rimmed with sugar; a clean cucumber number and, last but not least, my favorite: “The Devil’s Garden,” made with cucumber vodka, fresh watermelon juice and homemade Aji Limo syrup. It’s simply amaze-ballz! For me, there’s nothing sexier than a pretty drink when you’re enjoying a night out on the town.

Even though the Latin American-inspired eatery, which is a fusion of Spanish, Pan Latin, and Caribbean flavors, is a Magic City staple (it’s been in business for over eleven years,) it continues recreating itself and is still one of the best places to eat in town. The Ceviches are phenomenal and an absolute must-try on the menu.

The Fluke (with fresh Meyer lemon, chives and basil) is zesty, clean and fresh. The Wahoo is really wonderful (with watermelon jalapeño juice, basil, diced cantaloupe, red onions and cucumber sorbet,) but it’s the Mixto that’s absolutely marrrrvvvvvvelous with shrimp, octopus and cobia (in lime, orange juice, limo pepper, cilantro, Kalamata olives, served with a side of fried yuccas.) I could eat that seafood mix everyday for the rest of my life. How do you top that?

With enough Tapas for a small army, that’s how! The kitchen sent out a feast of Kobe meatballs (with foie-gras sherry sauce, black trumpet chimi and crispy shallot,) crispy Rock Shrimp (coated with rice and corn flour with a sweet and spicy panka sauce and cilantro) and two types of empanadas; Corn (served over mushroom salad with huitlacoche and sweet corn sauce) and Short Rib (with creamy habanero sauce and smoked orange rosemary marmalade.) Both were the perfect blend of puffy, fried dough filled with gooey goodness.

Finally, I was DYING to try Ola’s campy dessert that looks like a cigar and matches. It’s an almond chocolate cake enrobed in semisweet chocolate mousse with coffee ice cream and a candy matchbox. After that, it was sweet empanadas for everyone! If you’re looking for a lively night, with amazing food and a great atmosphere, this should be high-up on your fashionable foodie list and that’s why it’s one of my favorite things.

(A special thank you to Brian Lieberman for always being so generous and affable toward the press! It’s very much appreciated.)

Where:

Ola is located inside the Sanctuary Hotel on South Beach, just a hop, skip and a jump away from Collins Avenue. The Art Deco boutique hotel has long been a hang-out for the fun and fabulous crowd of Miami. It’s also a big hit with tourists, who love its intimate, cozy feel. Parking is really tight in this particular area of the beach, but there’s a valet right in front of the building for restaurant customers.

What: Dolce Italian at the Gale South Beach, 1690 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Why: It’s the type of place where you wanna hang-out with your closest friends, enjoy a long, lackadaisical cocktail and get around to dinner when you feel like it. Not only that, Dolce has just launched a really cool new Happy Hour: every single day of the week, you can choose from 8 great signature cocktails, 8 specially priced appetizers, all priced at 8 dollars. I guess I know what my new favorite number is.

This place is incredibly yummy, but don’t take it from me, take it from the best in the food business: Dolce has been selected to participate in a new television series on Bravo called “Best New Restaurant,” starring Master Chef Gordon Ramsay. It’s slated to air January 2015.

Where: In the Heart of South Beach across the street from the famed Delano Hotel on Collins Avenue. It’s a crowded area with snowbirds, tourists and locals to boot. Not to worry, though, the hotel offers valet parking on James Avenue. It’s just a short walk to the front door of the gorgeous, warm and welcoming Art Deco hotel.
