Moroccan Dreams

I first met Asmaa Benkirane on the rooftop of the Betsy Hotel on South Beach. I remember it well: it was a ruthlessly hot day. I was there to shoot a Miami spa month story for Deco Drive and I was trying not to sweat bullets through my new, bright green Moroccan style sundress. Wishful thinking…

Within 30 seconds of stepping onto the ocean front, open-air spa veranda, sweat started beading onto my upper lip and traces of moisture trickled down my back. I’m not gonna lie; I was pretty miserable, but I adored the spirit of the people pitching and presenting the story, so I was in it; sweaty neck, back, dress and all.

By the way, sometimes not even that uber-thick, pancake-like television make-up can withstand the South Florida heat. So, you just melt and try to make the best of it. Just as I started dabbing the dampness from my face with the back of my hand, Asmaa walked out of the hotel and into the blistering heat like a cool summer breeze.

She was light, airy and incredibly good-natured. She complimented me on my dress immediately, which would win any woman over, but when she told me she owned a store that specialized in couture kaftans, it caught my attention. Coincidentally, I had just purchased the pretty aforementioned green dress a few weeks prior at Anthropology. I loved its delicate detailing, flowing fit and the way it reminded me of something a woman in Morocco would wear.

The Must Have Maxi (just because…)

The Must Have Maxi (just because...)

My love for the high-low hemline started way back in high school because of a beautiful dress that I wore to my eleventh grade prom. While that hemline brought me a lot of happiness back then, the style quickly came and went. Now, a few decades later, “The Must Have Maxi (just because…),” is the must have dress of the Summer.

The style originated in the 19th century, to complement women’s evening wear. It was created to mix elegance and drama. It was also popular in the 30’s and 40’s and eventually, in the Summer of 2012, it seamlessly fit into fashion again. It’s been gaining steam ever since. The fun and flirty hemline is extremely versatile and best of all, it can show off a killer pair of legs or your favorite pair of shoes.

Even though the high-low skirt is uber-popular, I tend to lean toward the dress trend. For me, it’s more of a streamlined look. Sometimes a shirt/skirt pairing can be bulky, because you’re dealing with extra material. Especially if you’re petite and especially if you’re donning a dramatic hemline. The dress, on the other hand, elongates the body and if you pair it with nude shoes or an opened-toed, beige bootie (preferably the color of your skin,) you’ll immediately add extra length to your legs.

A State of Grace

A State of Grace

A State of Grace

Once upon a time, when glamour still reigned supreme and reality television and Kim Kardashian’s large derriere weren’t the center of pop culture, a glamorous Academy-Award winning actress fell in love with a prince. Their courtship captivated the world and their wedding, a royal affair, became the stuff dreams and romantic movies are made of.

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco met on a photo shoot at the Cannes Film Festival in the 50’s. At the time, Grace was just 25 years old, but already a bonafide movie star in Hollywood. Legend has it, Grace actually wanted to cancel the shoot because she had to get her hair done (something I totally understand,) but instead, upon a fellow actor’s urging, she decided to show up. The pair hit it off immediately.

There are a lot of different rumors about the way the rest of Grace’s life played out. The more salacious ones are said to be highlighted in the new movie, “Grace of Monaco,” starring Oscar-winning actress, Nicole Kidman. It’s debuting this year at Cannes, which I happen to be attending.

The Graduated Gladiator

The Graduated Gladiator

I fell head over heels in love with all things Roman esque back in 2000, when Russell Crowe breathed life into the rugged, rough-around-the edges and somewhat romantic character, General Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott’s epic drama,”Gladiator.

Matter of fact, everyone in the movie looked nothing short of spectacular, thanks to British Costume designer Janty Yates. Her designs were such a dazzling display of decadence, they spilled off the big screen and splashed onto fashion runways everywhere. Eventually, the Greek chic look became mainstream and Janty would go onto win her first Academy Award.

Over the next fourteen years, Gladiator styles (everything from ribbon braids, one shoulder maxi dresses, bold arm cuffs and gold wired earrings,) would fade in-and-out of fashion, but the shoe, or some version of it, would make a lasting impression. Especially this Spring and Summer. The leather-bound, head-turning, leg-climbing, sexy sandal has become a strapping wardrobe staple for fashionistas everywhere.

I smile wholeheartedly when I see flowers speckling the landscape of what is called a “fashionable life” (like the dress pictured in the blog by Clover Canyon.) And while a gorgeous, garden extravaganza on any garment is a clothing trend now, for me “Flower Power (a true awakening)” is a way of life.
