What:

Gearing up for the glitz and glamour of the holiday season with dresses & accessories by Dominque Boutique in Coral Gables. Oh, and did I mention I’m headed to The Keys for the ultimate girls trip?

Why:

By the time you read this, I’ll be barreling toward Key West with three of my closest friends. Each are besties from different decades of my life and strangely, they’ve never met one another. God help us! Lol. It’s going to be “Thelma & Louise” on crack.

Who needs to drive off the edge of the Grand Canyon, though, when you have places like Aqua Night Club, famous for its cabaret Drag shows! Or Louie’s Backyard, where a decadent martini can only be upstaged by a spectacular Key West sunset. I’ve even seen “people” skinny dip right by Louie’s popular pier-inspired porch.

If I’m arrested, it probably wasn’t my fault (wink, wink.) Seriously, though, it’s a trip I’ve been looking forward to for a really long time. It’s such a rarity, I’ve bequeathed it the title: “Rock Star Weekend.” Eating, drinking, shopping, laughing, reminiscing. I’ll be in full beast mode and my best friends will be right there with me. So, what does any of this have to do with holiday fashion? Everything, nothing and something.

I’ve actually been struggling with a meaningful topic to share during “the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” but then it dawned on me, the very essence of my girlie getaway is the perfect way to explain how many of us long to feel during Hanukkah, Christmas & on New Years Eve, and I’m not talking about bloated, tipsy and anxiety-ridden because you’ve spent too much on your credit card. I’m not judging #BeenThereDoneThat

I’m talking about human connection which, in turn, can make a person feel special. I’ve been to the Florida Keys more times than I can possibly count, lucky me, but each trip is marked with the memories of whom I shared it with and how it made me feel at the time. Whether it was friendship, love, intimacy or heartbreak, they’re all an indelible part of who I am now.

The same holds true for “Party Pizzazz”. It may sound corny, but a gorgeous gown, sparkly jewels, a pretty purse and sexy shoes are a form of self-expression: how you’re feeling, what you’re projecting and what you’re hoping to get in return. Don’t get me wrong, I know worldly things don’t solve problems or buy self- esteem, but showcasing the best of what you got for a special occasion can be a powerful thing and ultimately, it’s about connection.

Whether you’re dressing up for yourself, a lover or to relish the holiday spirit, it’s about opening ourselves up to what most of us long for — feeling special — if only for a moment, in our own little slice of this gi-normous, sometimes isolating, world. When I look my best, I feel my best and I think that’s just part of being human. Maybe I’m vain, but I’d like to think I’m just being transparent.

When I was a young journalist, l used to go through severe bouts of depression. The long hours, working holidays, being away from my family, it really got to me. When I’d call home to be consoled, my mother would bark: “Get out of bed, wash your face, put some lipstick on and do something.” It was tough love, but it was also my mom’s way of telling me when you look half-way decent, you’re more likely to feel better about yourself and if you go out and connect with someone, make friends, meet a special someone or heck, go for a walk in the park, you’ll probably be a more fulfilled person who sees the special qualities life has to offer.

Speaking of special, it’s easy to feel that way at Dominque Boutique in Coral Gables. It’s been a secret fashion weapon of mine for years, especially around the holidays. When it comes to “Party Pizzazz” there’s no other place in Miami that offers such beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind dresses and that’s not all: it’s literally one-stop shopping.

You can build an entire outfit there with ease; they have jewelry, purses, gloves, evening shrugs, hats and more. It’s perfect for a girl on the go or a woman who has a lot demands on her life, but still wants something incredibly jaw-dropping. And, if you’re lucky enough while you’re there, you’ll meet Dominque herself. She’s an inspiring fashionista who oozes class and sophistication, so it’s no surprise her store is a direct reflection of her fabulousness.

Whatever you’re wearing this holiday season, I hope your “Party Pizzazz” is accessorized with whatever your heart is longing for: love, peace, family, forgiveness, healing energy, health or just a moment of complete and utter happiness. I know this week I’ll be lucky enough to feel so many of those things with my closest friends and that’s why it’s one of my Favorite Things. #KeyWestOrBust #HappyHolidays 🎄

What:

Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami, Florida 33132

Why:

I’m obsessed with three things in life: shoes, vodka and flamingos (not necessarily in that order. ) So imagine my delight when I got wind of Jungle Island’s new brainchild: yummy hamburgers and my favorite fabulous pink, feathery friends. The food and flamingo shenanigans are all about highlighting the parks new cafe, Island Burger. The gist: eat food and watch flamingos.

With one of my favorite Deco Drive producers, I hightailed it over to Island Burger (which is right in front of Jungle Island) last week to enjoy an incredibly delicious Cuban Burger (there are 12 mouth-watering beef patties to choose from,) all whilst watching pink flamingos saunter about the park’s lush greenery.

It was nothing short of magical; with beautiful So-Flo winter temperatures, great food and a chance to escape a dark television studio while eating with a good friend. The entire situation gave me a major moment of jungle love (“oh-we oh-we-oh.”) My stop at the ever-so-famous park didn’t end there, though; the park offered me a tour of its featured attractions, allowing me to pair-up my favorite fall fashions with some of its exotic animals.

The flamingos were a no-brainer, fashionably speaking. We wanted to showcase the whimsical side of Florida fashion, which is always on display year around because of our sub tropical temps. Dominique’s Boutique hooked us up with everything pink! Fluffy, frilly and beyond girly was the goal. It’s not everyday a fashionista gets to hang out with her favorite feathery friends. The birds were delicate, dashing and oh-so dainty. They scare easily, so we had to be extra diligent when it came to movement while shooting pictures. The slower, the better. The result: everyone was pretty in pink.

Up next: my new best friend, Manny, the fluffy and friendly Lemur (who hails from Madagascar.) Manny’s rich and beautiful deep dark colors allowed us to really get into the textures of fall. A chic animal print dress, paired with strong accessories and a crocheted beanie cap helped set the mood. Honestly, though, Manny stole the show without even trying. I mean, look at those eyes! Our ode to the jungle outfit was also head-to-toe Dominique Boutique.

Birds of a feather flock together (at least at Jungle Island, they do!) I’ve always loved the beautiful and vivacious colors of tropical birds. Showcasing their vibrancy was easy in a bright green jumper from Hollen & Jen’s Vintage Showroom. It’s actually a piece I collected some time ago, but it’s hard to wear green on television due to the green screen, so instead, I waited for the perfect fashion moment to debut the vintage onesie and well, this seemed to be it. Added bonus: it has sleeves and having a parrot perched on your shoulders is a better experience with a little material under its talons.

Jungle Island is one of my favorite things because it’s the kind of place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of nature; recharging the mind, body and spirit. Besides, sometimes a fashionista just needs a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city and it doesn’t get much better than a “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

Where:

The park is located in the heart of the Magic City; just off the MacArthur Causeway (I-395) in between Downtown Miami and South Beach. Island Burger is conveniently placed at the front of Jungle Island and accessible without entering the park. There’s plenty of parking for both venues; with a roomy garage that validates your ticket if you’re just breezing through to pick-up lunch.

When:

Jungle Island is open 365 days a year! Usual hours are Monday-Sunday 10am-5pm.
Island Burger is open Monday-Friday 11am-3pm & Saturday-Sunday 11am-5pm.

She is pure Alice in Wonderland and her appearance and demeanor are a nicely judged mix of the Red Queen and a Flamingo.Truman Capote

My first time on the water in Miami was a bit of a disaster. I was on assignment for Deco Drive to get the deets on a new jet ski company specializing in showcasing the Magic City from a bay/ocean point-of-view. The idea was pretty cool, but I didn’t feel altogether comfortable being on the back of a jet ski, zipping around the city, for several reasons…

First off, I wasn’t exactly a “water girl.” I grew up in the desert; more specifically, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where I enjoyed hiking, cave exploring and horseback riding. The only body of water remotely worth spending time around was the Rio Grande River, which we affectionately nicknamed “The Rio Sandy.”

It was beyond dry, parched and riddled with rattlesnakes, who were always looking for shade, water and someone to sink their teeth into. Let’s just say, that kind of atmosphere did nothing for my swimming abilities and/or my love of the water. Making matters worse, as an aspiring television reporter, I reluctantly moved my way around the U.S., living in small, dusty country towns best known for their beef, not their beaches.

By the time I arrived in Miami, I had a healthy fear of the water and didn’t understand why everyone basked/baked in the sun and boated their way around the bay, the Keys, even the Bahamas. I came to South Florida because it was a well-known television gateway. If you worked in Miami you were destined for a national TV show; better yet, you could even get picked up by the Network. A day at the beach wasn’t exactly my intention. That is…

Until I found myself in a skimpy bathing suit, straddling the back of a jet ski, holding onto some guy I barely knew for dear life. Upon seeing my nervous disposition, he quickly scolded me: “Stop being such a scaredy-cat, relax and trust me.” Yeah, famous last words. As we made our way into the water and the “ocean crotch rocket” started picking up speed, I quietly cursed my Deco Drive Assignments Editor and told my new pal: “Please don’t go fast and remember, I’m not a good swimmer.”

“That’s what your life jacket is for, you idiot,” he screamed over the ear-bending engine noise. With my camera man directly across from me (on another jet ski,) we took off into the abyss and I have to say, it was one of the most terrifying, frightening, horrendous experiences of my life. Over ten years later, it’s still Deco fodder.

A Candy Bag

When I asked designer Candy Woolley how many purses she owned from her luxury handbag line, her answer shocked me. In fact, at first I didn’t believe her. “Just one,” she mused as I aggressively quizzed her during our recent “Shireen’s Favorite Things” fashion photo shoot. “How is that possible?” I asked in disbelief.

Of course, the question was coming from a raging fashion addict who’s motto is: “you can never have too many purses or pairs of shoes.” What’s more, it’s no secret that when it comes to high heels and beautiful bags, moderation is not my strong suit.

Candy, however, explained that she only carries her trusty cowhide travel tote for a simple reason. When she first started out as a young designer, almost everything she made, loved and therefore got attached to, would literally be negotiated right out of her hands; women simply wanted what she was wearing.

Eager to make a sale, she would immediately dump out the contents of her purse right in the middle of wherever she happened to be at the time and viola, a happy customer would make off with “A Candy Bag.”

That experience, which luckily happened over and over again, would not only teach her NOT to become too enamored with her own designs, it would also signify that she was really onto something: a booming bag business.

Candy, who’s a very pretty, affable brunette, has an undeniable God given talent. She can design a purse just as good, if not better, than some of the best high-end bag designers in the business. She probably inherited her artistic gifts from her parents, who are third generation tailors.

Growing up, Candy was always surrounded by fabrics, textures, patterns and fashion. She learned to sew when she was just thirteen and quality was something her parents instilled in her from a very early age. They also taught Candy business acumen by openly sharing client conversations, where she quickly learned about sourcing fabrics and materials.
