Shireen's Spotlight: Rouge Miami Beach

What:

Rouge, 908 71st Street, Miami Beach, Florida, 33141

Why:

Besides having incredibly delicious French and Moroccan cuisine, Rouge has the most romantic garden in its backyard, filled with pretty mosaic tables, colorful candle lanterns, a fire place and lots of lush greenery. It’s truly a small slice of paradise. Rouge calls it: “a green oasis in the midst of urban chaos.”

Inside, the mood is rich, dark and decadent. I especially love the waiting area by the long wooden bar (just as you enter the restaurant.) It reminds me of some of my favorite pubs in England with rich textures, warm lighting and a vintage piano to entertain guests.

I easily gobbled up the Beet and Goat Cheese Napoleon salad. It was sweet, succulent and extra yummy with pesto dressing. My absolute favorite, though, was the Tajine de Caille Farcis au Couscous, Merguez et Raisins (traditional Moroccan quail stuffed with lamb sausage, couscous and raisins.) I’ve never tasted anything quite like it: clean, flavorful and slightly spicy, made all the more interesting thanks to a saffron flare. I washed it all down with a suggested house Bordeaux. Perfection.

Last, but definitely not least, I split the Choco Crunch & Red Berries with my crew. It was beyond decadent with rich chocolate, a crumbly base, powdered sugar and just enough bite from the berries to balance out the sweetness. Believe you me, there were NO leftovers.

I absolutely adore Rouge. It was recently voted (and I’m not surprised) one of the “Most Romantic Restaurants in America” by OpenTable Diner’s Choice. It’s not only the perfect place to spend Valentine’s Day (they’re offering a special dinner menu,) it’s a great place for any kind of date.

Where:

It’s right in the heart of Normandy Village, a few steps from its famous Art Deco fountain. It’s a sweet little neighborhood with great restaurants and a nice farmer’s market on the weekend. Parking is easy; they have a lot in the back that boasts plenty of room.

When:

Sunday-Thursday 12:00pm-11:00pm, Friday-Saturday 12:00pm-12:00am

Layers of Love

Layers of Love

Layers of Love

I saw love’s face on a perfect December afternoon in a small garden in front of a white gazebo on the west side of Miami. I wept openly at the site of her. She was beyond beautiful and everything I thought she would be; compassionate, caring, graceful and unconditional. I had seen her before, but never like this: so powerful, raw and awe-inspiring. The experience changed me forever.

I’m not sure why, as I had seen love many times before in my life. Especially in my relationships (marriage, motherhood, parents and friends,) but watching my good friends, Jessie and Jesse (the universe wasn’t messing around when it came to pairing these two) get married under a perfect blue sky, with the people they loved most surrounding them, was undeniably one of the most moving experiences of my life. I had never afforded myself such an opportunity.

The first time I got married, I eloped with a man almost twice my age. We ran away to Corpus Christi, Texas and found a small, quaint chapel by the sea to exchange vows. My mother begged me not to do it and honestly, it’s probably why I went through with it. I rebelled against her because I didn’t want to end up like her, but my decision itself was a complete incarnation of her life. She, too, had married early and found out too late she had made a mistake. Nonetheless…

I wore a pretty short, white summer dress with a high collar and a lace back. I paired it with a string of fake pearls and delicate, white strappy sandals. My brother, who found out about my not-so-secret elopement, showed up at the last minute to walk me down the aisle. My parents were right behind him; making me unspeakably mad. I hated everyone for crashing my party of independence, but looking back at it now, I realize it’s because they loved me.

Shireen's Spotlight: Lou's Beer Garden & Gastro Pub

What:

Lou’s Beer Garden, 7337 Harding Avenue, Miami Beach, FL. 33141

Why:

It’s one of the hippest, hottest, well-hidden gems in Miami. Tucked into a canopy of lush, tropical green trees, Lou’s is truly unique: serving great food, unusual craft beers and delicious drinks. Its centerpiece is a pretty pool that sits right in front of the always buzzing open-aired bar.

Although it’s kicked-back and relaxed, don’t mistake this place for some kind of local joint; it’s way more than that. The quality of the food is beyond excellent. I’ve tried almost everything on the menu and I’ve never been disappointed. Matter of fact, this place serves cuisine that I would easily compare to a fancy-schmancy restaurant.

My favorite things on the dinner menu include the Big Angus Burger, Our Carbonara and the Diavola Pizza. Brunch is fabulous, too. The Mary Jane Veggie Frittata, Oppenheimer Death Row Pork Cutlet and Bodacious BLT are crazy good. You’re definitely gonna wanna wash your midday meal down with one of Lou’s famous hot-&-spicy Bloody Mary’s. There’s so much garnish on the drink, it’s like a meal in itself. I hang out at Lou’s when I want to get away from the madness of Miami. The only problem – when I go, I never want to leave.

Where:

Lou’s is right off Harding in North Beach. Parking is tricky because it’s literally right off the side of the road, but there’s a parking lot one block South that’s easily walkable. From my experience, Lou’s is the kind of place where you wanna linger, so it’s always better to cab or uber it.

(The pictures in this blog are from a “Shireen’s Favorite Things” photo shoot I did at Lou’s last year and some personal candids. Trust me, this place is totally worth going out of your way for. Everyone I love, including my Deco Drive/Channel 7 colleagues, always go to Lou’s and that says a lot.)

The Evolution of the TV Anchor

My first day on the job as a television reporter was nothing short of terrifying. I was young, insecure and horribly dressed. Of course, I didn’t know it at the time (the horribly dressed part.) Wearing a crisp, bright red blazer, checkered blue and white gauchos and navy high heeled Mary Janes with sweet little bows on top, I was ready to take on the world and my very first television story.

When I showed up to work, my very old, strung-out-on-coffee-and-cigarettes assignment editor barked out my marching orders: “Your story is about the largest private hospital in the area turning indigent.” My response was, not surprisingly, idiotic: “Well, that sounds interesting,” I said enthusiastically. “No shit, Sherlock,” he quipped while handing me a stack of press releases. “You’re the lead at 6pm,” he grunted. “This is my first day. Should I really be the lead?” I sighed insecurely, under my breath. He didn’t even bother looking up from his computer, but…

Just as I turned to walk out the door, he called after me: “Hey, new kid – you’re not going to wear that on television, are you?” Everyone in the newsroom simultaneously burst into laughter. I smirked at him, shook my head and bee-lined it for the hospital. Once I met my videographer, I did, indeed, piecemeal my way through the story and proudly presented it during my very first television live-shot on the 6PM news. After the tally light went off on the camera, I punched the sky and belted out the theme to “Rocky.” It was a defining moment…

Unfortunately, I did it all while wearing that not-so-flattering outfit. If I was being totally honest, though, I didn’t really have a choice in the matter. I was just starting out in the business and was as broke as a spandex maker when grunge hit. So to make due, I would piece together outfits from free clothing I got from my old pageant and modeling days. I learned pretty quickly, though, my sob story didn’t matter because viewers didn’t give a flying flip. The next day, my News Director forwarded me my first official complaint.

The ladies name was Barbara; yes, I still remember her name and in no uncertain terms she wrote the station, cc’ing my General Manager, to inform them that during my (very first) live-shot, I wasn’t wearing enough lipstick, my hair was too flat and my gauchos were hideous. Luckily, she thought I did a good job on the story. Welcome to television!

Shireen’s Spotlight: Morimoto South Beach (inside the Shelborne Wyndham Grand Hotel)

morimoto-1

morimoto-3

morimoto-2

What: Morimoto, 1801 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach Florida, 33139

Why: Holy orgasmic food goodness! I finally get why people say not all things are created equal; Morimoto’s on South Beach is the perfect example. It has some of the best food I’ve ever tasted in my life. I’m no food critic, but I’ve traveled around the world and dined at my fair share of fancy restaurants. I was absolutely blown away by the food’s excellent quality, aesthetic prowess and detailed decadence.

Morimoto’s famed Tuna Pizza is a must-have. I devoured mine (topped with anchovy aioli, olives and jalapeños,) in about 5 minutes flat. It’s the answer to almost every sushi lovers prayer. The ceviche, which includes a hefty amount of lobster, white fish and conch, was a close second, but it was the Toro Tartar I found most interesting. The chopped tuna belly is served with six different condiments: nori paste, wasabi, sour cream chives, guacamole and rice crackers. It’s amaze-balls.

The absolute highlight of the night, though, was the gi-normous sushi platter (pictured in the blog) that made it’s way to my table mid dinner. It was a feast for the eyes and stomach. Thank goodness, I had a few friends on hand to share the yummy goodness. It was enough to feed a small fashion army and it did. My favorite drink: the Passion Fruit Marguarita (made with tequila, domaine canton and spicy passion fruit.) It has just the right mix of sweet, salty and sour to compliment the freshest of fish.

Although I’m not a big desert person, my dinner easily turned into a prepubescent teen party with major squeal-age once the Fiery Salty Caramel Chocolate Tart arrived. The desert comes with a gigantic chocolate ball that’s lit up and melted into gooey perfection. It’s new on the menu and worth every single, solitary, beyond-sinful calorie.

The open-air, unpretentious hot spot has a warm golden glow to it and an easy atmosphere. What’s more, I found the waitstaff to be very knowledgable and extremely friendly (which is unusual for South Florida; usually, it’s more like the server is doing you a favor and can’t be bothered.) Since expanding my blog and doing Shireen’s Spotlight, this is the place I’m most impressed with. If you haven’t gone yet, you have to ask yourself; WHY?

Where: Morimoto’s is elegantly snuggled into the back of the famed South Beach Shelborne Hotel. When I first moved to Miami, I spent many crazy nights in the basement of that hotel, belting out horribly off-key Karaoke at Club Studio. Man, those were the good old days. As a result, the joint holds a special place in my heart.

Since then, the Shelborne has undergone a major renovation and is now a Wyndham Grand property. It’s biggest “get” as of late, though, is Morimoto’s. The entrance to the restaurant is on the south side of the building, which opens up into the pool area. It still boasts that famous Art Deco spiral staircase that’s been the backdrop for a gazillion famous fashion ads (most notably, old school Versace.)

If you live on the beach, you know how parking is: impossible, but for a pretty penny, Morimoto’s has its own valet. This place is perfect for a romantic date, a special occasion dinner. If you do one thing decadent for yourself this year, dinner at Morimoto’s should be it.

When: Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday 6pm-12pm, Friday & Saturday 6pm-1am.
